The Bar 2014 Edition

All things outside of Burning Man.

We got about 10 inches here yesterday, and are expecting another 8 or so tomorrow.

I loved the cheese brine story. A few years ago, a town in the midwest somewhere used a bad batch of garlic salt that would have been otherwise discarded to de-ice their roads.

Hey, mojojita.....no joke....the guy who invented the tow plow is a friend of mine. The Canadians are already using it. He stands to make some serious $$ now since he's retired. I just wish he'd come to the event. He'd come up with a great art car.

There's money to be made in tinkering with the right idea. Ask Ed Malzahn. He came up with a piece of trenching equipment that looks like a chain saw on the back of a backhoe....and Ditch Witch was born. The people at his factory still tinker. They came up with the 'Super Witch', a Ditch Witch trencher on steroids with a turbocharged 850 horsepower Chevy engine, and it'll do 100' of 3" wide 4-foot deep trench in about a minute.

And it does wheelies, too.

Imagine doing a contract for cable installation with the Super Witch....done in 1/4 the time.

There's an up side and a down side to using food waste products as deicing chemicals. They smell AWFUL in the tank, but they do make the roadside grass grow pretty well. Well enough that they actually have to mow more often on the routes where they are used.

So far I know sugar beet wastewater and cheese brine has found use, anybody know anything else?

There's money to be made in tinkering with the right idea.

I have an idea for a bicycle part that I believe has good commercial potential, and I have two prototypes in operation. But I have no idea how to get rich off it. Getting a patent seems to be a major affair. So I'll just slowly add them to Playa bikes.
My strength is that I can describe in words how it works and how it is different from existing Stuff that resembles it. And of course, I can present working prototypes.

But I have fun anyway! :D

I know exactly what you mean. The first thing you need is to develop relationships with professionals that you can really TRUST. Hard enough in this world as it is. After you have a suitable drawing done in the style of US patents, THEN you cobble your description together and put it to a lawyer/engineer known as a patent attorney. They do a patent search to see if anyone else had the idea already within the scope and range of your description. If nobody does, then he moves into the prosecution phase...where he prosecutes the patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office....from there, you STILL have two to three years to go.

Back in 2000, I met the original patent holder for horizontal directional drilling, Martin Cherrington. He was a contractor who didn't want to fool with the methods he'd developed in the oil patch for installing underground utilities. He sold the rights to a firm from New York, name of Comstock, and it became known as the 'Comstock' patent. They litigated for payments from anyone who would use the methods that Cherrington used (Cherrington, happily, kept on building bigger and better equipment to get the job done). When the "comstock Patent' expired in 1992, all of a sudden you had multiple companies building equipment for 'trenchless' installation of utilities - Ditch Witch, Vermeer, and others. Why? Because trenchless methods of installation cut into their trencher markets.

Choose a patent attorney with care, but he's the one to get the ball rolling.

Well it's done… I have a new septic drain field… and no money for Burning Man tickets.
But I do have a two bedroom condo on the beach in Kauai and sky miles to burn. It's looking more like an EASY vacation will win out this year.
I can pack for Hawaii in 30 minutes, and 20 minutes of that will be looking for my suitcase and then realizing all I need is a small bag.

Well crap Cap. I was so looking forward to pointing and laughing at you this year..
The guy I work so many years for.. Told me not to go back to the islands.. I remember them as a small beach with few two story buildings.. That was a life time ago.. The man told me to just hold unto my memories..

And who pays for all this? I have a hunch "it takes money to make money". Kickstarter? Then I have to give the information away right up front. I think I will just happily tinker with my toys, and leave the World out of it. The Man burns in 206 days! :D

Well I'll have this shit paid down in a few months… I work a lot.
Yeah, Elliot drove the boat, and I'd like to officially state that he never exceeded 5 knots. Yes, I'd LIKE to state that…
Yesterday I turned the key and it wouldn't start. I'll mess with it in a few months. The highest temp today is below freezing in Seattle.

Seattle is a MAD HOUSE today!!!! The Super Bowl celebration parade is on!!!! There are ONE MILLION people downtown right now! It's off the scale!

I will pre-register the Yacht with the DMV this summer, in case things work out for a BM trip. Someday that rental house will be a profitable enterprise; lately it's just flattening me.
