Been hitting the gym 4 days a week since January. Now up to 5.

Pretty awesome lifting plan from http://www.strstd.com/ these guys. That 5/3/1 plan they use is amazing. I have added 70lbs to my deadlift in less than 3 months. Equal gains on my other lifts. On course to pass my previous personal bests by the summer.

Also doing cardio, a straight up HIIT routine, sprint 25 seconds, 2 min active rest. Going to be aiming for 15 min at a 3:1 ratio rest to sprint by the summer.

Warm up 10 min of the rowing machine, aiming for 2400m, then the weights, then HIIT. Feels great :)

^^^^^^

Not a bad plan. I follow the "Starting Strength" program by Mark Rippetoe. My girl plays on a defensive line for a woman's football team. She is 5'3" and wanted to get bigger and stronger. Five main lifts...bench, deadlift, back squat, military press and power cleans.

Its awesome. Both of our gains have been great! Powerlifting with your partner=sexy!

i did starting strength for about a year. also a wicked program. i also got good results from madcow's 5x5. so far though, the 5/3/1 is working way better than anything else.

Mikgus, that is amazing.

Now that my MBA class is over and i'm back to teaching only undergrads, I can ramp my fitness schedule back up again. It's probably a bit over the top at the moment, but i'm currently digging it:

Mon: strentgh/condition circuit w/ my PT
Tues: spinning class
Wed: 1/2 circuit on my own w/ short bike cardio (basically a rest day)
Thurs: spinning class
Fri: strength/condition circuit w/ my PT
Sat or Sun (1 or the other): spinning class

The circuit is actually super simple. 20 right-leg step ups on a 20" box, 20 left-leg step ups on the same, 20 standing rows on resistance bands, 20 chest presses on the same, 1 minute rest, 20 squats, 20 overhead presses with dumbells, 1 minute rest. Repeat circuit 3X. with warmup and cooldown stretching it takes about 45 minutes. Reps stay the same, weight & resistance goes up every time the third circuit is doable to 20 reps (which has happened twice so far). Trainer is great for correcting sloppy form, especially on the 3rd circuit when you're getting tired.

I also really, *really* like Spinning classes for some strange reason. I do alot of biking outside, but spinning is nothing like it. Maybe there's something to the whole "just shut down the brain and follow the class leader's instructions for an hour" thing that works for me, and lets me really focus on my form and heartrate. It helps that the studio has a massive parabolic video wall that shows bike race footage and tours. I also think spinning is *great* for people just getting into group exercise classes because you can really tailor it to your personal level, and it won't be obvious that you might not be going exactly as hard as the class leader. When they say to add a gear (i.e. add resistance), you can add a bunch or a little, it's up to you; so you can always be working at a good challenging level for yourself without worrying that you're sticking out like a sore thumb like you might in Zumba or Aerobics or something. The bikes can pick up your heart-rate sensor too, so you don't even need to check your wrist to see where you're at. Heck, one of the spinning classes I take actually puts everyone's target heartrates and percentages of max up on the big screen, and it's all about training at specific heartrate percentages (not a competition).

Bump. Our good Mr. Trilobyte referred to this thread in a new thread. I figured this old thread had died of boredom. But here we are, and here am I -- around 185 pounds at BM 2013. With me is Cherryblossom73, who made me the marvelously "manly" tutu for Tutu Tuesday wear.

There is nothing new about how I have now pretty much gotten rid of my Trucker Belly. (I spent/wasted 27 years driving 18-wheelers.) We all know how -- it's just a matter of willpower. For me, my decision to go nude for much of this year's burn was a big willpower-booster. I simply like feeling the breeze on all of my skin, and not feeling my movements hampered by awkward textile-contraptions, and I wasn't about to do that with the "spare tire" still on me. So... yogurt, veggies, and portion control, and a bit of daily walking.

175 for sure by 2014. We may have to take in the tutu. :D

Congratulations on your svelte form, Elliot! Losing fat also helps reduce estrogen in the body, which promotes an improved mood. Keep at it!

Great thread....

I'm planning to go to Burning Man in 2014 and want to be in as good shape as possible.

I had gastric bypass in March 2013. I'm down 86 pounds so far, with the hope of losing another 70 before next summer. I've started biking to work from home.... 10 1/2 km each way. Now that summer is over, I'm starting at the gym.

Being in shape for Burning Man is great incentive.

Hopefully other people will post and bring this thread back to life.

I always look & feel so sexy upon returning from the playa. Something about a week of food deprivation and non-stop physical activity really tones me up, hell I damn near have a six pack at the moment. Also, my complexion is so clear and healthy while I'm in BRC; I think something about the alkalinity of the playa really balances out the ph of my skin. I might look into developing a skin serum out of that magic dust lol

I came home to masses of weeds and wild black berry vines..

I wont be needing a gym for awhile.. Monday brings another load of chip to spread.. The compost row needs turned.. Grapes need harvest .. The beat go's on..

Still finding time to do shopping on the trike.. Bout 4 miles a day up and down hills.. No electric for this training for 14..

I end up losing 5 lbs after two weeks on playa.

I really hit the gym hard prior to playa, then take from the day I leave to October 1st off.

Then its back to the gym...

I need to get into this, and get some motivation to get more fit. I also want to drop 20lbs. I am such a bad procrastinator, I always will start tomorrow...

I thought I'd drop at least 5 on the playa for 2 weeks, but it was about 2. Much more exercise and the only food I ate more of than usual was bacon.

Must. Start. Moving. More.

I finally got my butt back into the gym properly tonight. Since returning from the playa, I'd had my weekly dance class and a little recumbent bike tacked on once or twice after class and exactly one run (Saturday), but between being sick & being tired, I'd kinda fallen off the exercise bandwagon.

I forgot what a help to decompression a good workout is, once one is done pouting about having to go do it.

I joined a little old lady gym. Has crystal chandeliers and lavender upholstery on the machines. We shall see how it goes, but I'm more inclined to use the machines there than at Gold's. Less scrutiny, noise, and "those" looks.

Yes! That gym looks fabulous! Motivation is everything in our struggle to maintain our health. The gym I have used looks like a temporary industrial shop, slapped together for disaster relief or some such. It's downright unpleasant to be in the room.

Well, I'm off on my morning walk. :D
