As always (and was also the case before sites like kickstarter came along), contribute only to the projects you care to contribute to.

Didn't see the NYC Core... Maybe that message was a lil mistake from them...

Good catch, it was in the draft but omitted in the revised list that went out. I've added Star In The City from NYC core, can't wait to see it :)

Phew!!! The NYC Core sent a message the other day calling for volunteers so you got me nervous.

I'm excited for it and looking forward to helping out with it.

The CORE projects got a nice write-up in Visual News. The piece also features some of the art/renders on the designs. The Huffington Post did a reblog here.

I was surprised by the number of past projects that received honorariums this year. Sure, it's nice to bring back past art, but I would have thought more preference would have been given to new projects - or that they could fund transport on their own.

I'm surprised at your being surprised. Burning Man has been providing grant money to help artists bring new iterations of old favorites for the last several years. Preference is given for new art (and there's plenty of it), though nobody gets fully funded by Burning Man (everyone raises the majority of the funds they need themselves). I'm not sure if you've ever built or brought art to the playa, but your post makes it seem like you might think all the returning art teams need to do is put it on a truck and haul it out there. That's generally not the case - most teams I know who bring an existing project back out end up spending months working on it (repairs, upgrades, etc).

I've got a couple tidbits to share....

This year is shaping up to have more art than ever! In the funded department, nearly $900K in funding is going out to 90 funded projects (including the CORE, 4-5 altars around the man, and pieces installed inside the man pavilion). In the overall/non-funded department, ARTery has received more registrations for art placement than ever before. Last year was a record-breaker in in the number of registered projects department, and this year that record was broken back in May!

Also, there will be 102 pieces of burning art on the playa (either structures to be burned or with flame and fire effects) - holy crap, that's gonna be awesome!

And of course, that info is just from the projects that have registered. There's lots of additional art that's within camps, and walk-up art is always welcome. Dream it up, build it, and bring it to Burning Man. You can stop by the ARTery and they'll be happy to get you placed on the playa. See this page for more information about creating art for the playa.
