SOLD: and COMPLETED: Ticket Giveaway

Postby Gazmatron » Thu Jun 06, 2013 8:05 am

Ok, here's the deal. I bought a block of 4 holiday sale tickets and I don't need all of them. I've considered selling the ones I don't need, but frankly I'm disappointed that the holiday sale was so expensive and believe it was poor judgement by the powers that be. Rather than sell them at face value I've decided to go the other extreme and gift them.

My only condition is that they go to virgin burners who might otherwise struggle to make it... Basically, I like the idea of gifting the opportunity to someone who hasn't experienced Burning Man before.

I'll be in San Francisco the week before and will meet the recipient(s) to say HI, and check name/ID for will call. This is because I'll need to put your name down at the will call office when I arrive, and I want to make sure the tickets are going to genuine people.

I'll publish name and location of recipient(s) on this board in the hope that it will encourage fair play. If anyone spots a flaw in my plan, please comment constructively;)

I'll put the names in a hat and draw at random later this month. Please no stories or letters. This will be the luck of the draw. That is all.

Very generous!

So only folks who can be in SF can enter? Could you Skype for verification? I don't need a ticket, and the person I want to get one for is not a virgin, has attended once. I do know a first timer in SLC who needs a ticket, but if she can't meet you, I won't pass this on to her.
These are not my fuckos.

Fair point, I don't want to exclude anyone, but I think it's important to meet in person otherwise anyone could put their name down and I'd have no idea where they go. I just thought SF would be the most convenient option for people.

I'm open to suggestions but not sure about Skype. I'll give it some more thought though. Meanwhile I'll stick with having to meet in person to do the ID thing etc. I live in Sydney and I'll be in Reno on the 25th if that helps anyone. Even if it's a bit out of someone's way to meet, it's arguably not a lot to ask for a free ticket...

No Worries :) ...I saw your email. I think my previous post answers part of your question, but for now I'll wait and see whether the Reno option helps. You sound like you're prepared to be flexible, so I'm sure we'd be able to work something out if your name comes up.

One more thing I thought of. Please remember to email me if you put your name down and manage to find a ticket before the draw, so I can remove your name. My advice to anyone would be to take the first ticket you can get your hands on! ;)

Nice one Gazmatron,

Love the attitude - this shit was overpriced so ill give it away!

I can see a potential technical snd logistical issue around not being able to break the tickets up and groups, usually couples being interested.
I'm sure you'll sort it though!

Reading the original post, it sounds like the plan is for Gazmatron to pick up his/her order and then leave the remaining ticket in the name of the person they choose.

@Turteburb, Lol! It didn't take long for someone to lower the tone!

@Trilobyte, Correct. I'll need either one or two of the tickets for my group (I'll know in a couple of weeks), so I'll be leaving either two or three in the names of whoever gets them at will call. Obviously we'll need to arrange to arrive at roughly the same time, or I get there first (unless they want to hang out in the will call car park for a few hours;). I've left tickets at will call before and was very easy to sort out.

Just a quick word of thanks to everyone who has emailed me so far. Sorry I haven't had chance to reply to many yet, but everyone has been truly awesome with lots of words of support! Such an amazing bunch of people, we should probably organize a camp ;-) ...I only wish we had enough tickets for everyone!

I'll update everyone as soon as I can confirm an exact date for the draw.

Someone asked a question via email that made me realize there are a couple of ways to interpret a draw such as this. For example, you could draw one winner and give all tickets to the one person or you could draw multiple times and give one ticket to each person.

My intention has always been the later. I will draw multiple names, and give one ticket to each person. I have had a few couples email me and I'll simply put each name down separately, so every person in the draw has an equal chance of winning one ticket.

Phew, so much to think about... now I know why there are so many terms and conditions on the back of lottery tickets! ;-)

I started following dusty brick road to burning man, and can't wait to get there.. and hopefully be the first Jordanian to ever become a citizen of black rock city!
I'm in STEP and looking for two tickets for me and my boyfriend who is coming at end of august, I haven't seen him in a year and we can't wait to celebrate at the BM!! :)
Even if we don't get a ticket here, just thought to say thanks for the chance!

And any advice to a couple of virgin burners is more than welcome, our hearts are open and we are ready to learn!
An hopefully when I get the tickets (fingers crossed) I'll be back to offer a ride or stay for anyone heading there! I'm in Carson City, we can ride some tumble weeds together to the BM! :) It would be cool to meet some burners before and maybe get some tips before heading there!

And hope to see you on the Playa!!!

You'd need a time machine to earn that distinction. I met people from Jordan on the playa back in 2005, and don't imagine they were the first.

Trilobye,

Seriously! I wish I met Jordanians like that while I was living there, well I'm disappointed but, thanks for just making me be even more proud of my nomadic Jordanian genes!
Since you are a moderator, can I ask you relatively how safe it is to buy "ready to pickup" burning man tickets off the the eplaya, it just that it looks like the ones i've seen are posted by members that just recently joined the forum and only have that one post.
I don't want seem rude, and say i don't trust everyone here, but I just don't want to be too naive either, any thoughts?

I'm pretty sure Queen Noor has a photo of her and King Hussein on the playa on a large motorcycle.

No idea if it was during a burn.

The only truly secure method of purchasing tickets is through STEP. Take a few minutes to read all the announcements on the ticket boards, it's chock full of advice and tips from myself, the other moderators, and the folks at Burning Man. Ticket seeking and selling brings a lot of users to the board, but it doesn't make them bad people (your own first post is in response to a ticket thread). Personally, I think people are inherently good and so long as you take reasonable precautions (read those announcements) you should be okay. Join STEP, read stuff, be careful - you'll be fine :)

In Carson City--you're close to a fairly high concentration of tickets in Reno, and if you make contact with the Reno burners now you have a good chance of finding one through the community and using the network to see if you can work up enough trust.

I'm explaining poorly. And I look at Trilo and think "what a nice answer to have made if something happens to this girl during a ticket purchase." So, I've never done this, and it might not be as safe as STEP, but with tickets being mailed out now, you might have to go with plan b, not-step.
