Fundraiser: The Fertile Desert Lives On! New Film

Postby roy two thousand » Wed Jun 05, 2013 11:44 am

Hello!

I'm writing to ask for your help.

For the past month I've been fundraising to make another film portrait of Burning Man and the incredible art that it cultivates. My last film 'The Fertile Desert' was a personal triumph and a film festival success, and now I hope to create something even more powerful to behold!!

I'm entering the final hours and need your help to reach my stretch goal! Any amount is helpful, even just 5 or 10 dollars :)

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/roy ... g-man-2013

I have Limited Edition Art Prints of my time-lapse photography; Download Collections of my music, photography and films; Timelapse Workshops; Filming services; and Custom Timelapses that I am offering in exchange for your contribution.

This will be the ONLY time I offer prints from 'The Fertile Desert' to the public! You know you want one:)

Please help spread the word if you can. If you know anyone else who might be interested in helping, please send my campaign their way:)

Thank you so much!!

I wish you all success on your project, but I must tell you i'm not sure I want to support someone who has already exceeeded his kickstarter goal but now wants more money (stretch goal?). Why not be happy with what you already have? Anyway, just one person's take. Good luck!

I am STOKED with I have already!! This is not about unhappiness, nor is it about radical self entitlement. I am truly BLESSED to be part of such a wonderful experience, and this is about SHARING that experience with others.

I like to think of this also as an opportunity to include more people who are interested in being involved with a community project.. because it is supported by the community.. and I am now given a chance to transform that into something that is FOR the community.

I also have Limited Edition Prints from 'The Fertile Desert' and there might be some people who would want to grab a print AND support this community project at the same time :)

Much love!!

Yours is not a project that will touch many burners on the playa.. There are hundreds of folks out taking pictures.. Some share then here on E playa orJRS..

You sound like your project is to further "your" career..

Giving you money so you can take pictures is not my bag.. The odds of ever seeing them is way out there in never never land..

Glad you did a labor of love... Lets see you do it again..

It's no big deal that you did your project out of pocket.. Did you miss any meals?

That is how I do (all) of mine..

quoted from the personal webpage linked to (why do so many artists think speaking of themselves in the third person is in any way good?) :

"He is well deserving of reaching a broader audience. If for no other reason that he inspires us all to smile :)"

roy two thousand wrote:This is not about .... radical self entitlement. I am truly BLESSED ...

uhm yeah.

crank it down a few notches on the 'i am blessed' 'i deserve an audience' 'give me even MORE money' shit and you might actually win over some of the more crotchety types round here..

as it is.. it seems like youre able to win the people over who want to Buy Shit ...or who actually think giving money to someones hobby horse personal project is a good idea..

but youre gonna need to work on the whole 'whats in it for me' mindset that many will see when youre out there begging for cash.

as is? i dont see much more than a self entitlement project...... perhaps a snazzy video watched on a computer can win over some people, and maybe some people feel that $14000 for a video is actually something the burning man community needs... but i dont see it.

the posts youve made here so far seem all about self promotion..(each one has a look at my shit link). just crying from the rooftops that youre blessed to be a part of it and that it's for us isnt exactly winning me over.. as, well, youre the one who seems to benefit the most from this.

there is no shortage of people making 'documentaries' at burning man.

and frankly? i dont care what makes yours different. because at this point, we done seen it all.. we've reached maximum capacity and ya know.. these videos dont change anything and i dont see giving people the warm fuzzies as worth all that much in terms of time/effort... it dont matter how good the video is.

so you get to make a video..

and get to keep all of the gear forever

and what do we get?

some bullshit about how its for us, we get to watch it.. once..... twice if we're really damned bored and..... then burning man stays the same as it ever was.

and the involvement of building the temple really doesnt seem to add much of anything.. warming the hearts of newbies might be nice, but those whove been there have seen most of whats to be seen.. and ya know, burning man is better when your actually at burning man..... we dont need a stinkin video (even if they are fun to watch at times...)

want to do something for the community?

give us something we actually need.

14,000$ coulda bought lotsa /something/ that we could actually use.

theres more to giving back to the community than building some sculpture
or giving out booze
or making some fuckin documentary.

theres more to burning man than kickstartrs.

imagine if you used that money to help defray the costs of people who got helicoptored out!!!!!

or for some shit that actually makes a difference.

Eplaya snark strikes again.

I loved the video, and it's one of the things I used to convince my parents that there is more to Burning Man than electronic music, drugs, and sex. Now they are accompanying me for a few days out there. I wish there were more videos like yours that captured a side of the event that is tough to show, and also muted for whatever reason. I'll see about tossing a couple of bucks your way.

Those are nice photos, definitely worthy for prints, but I wouldn't feel right funding yet another video about the playa.

Really? It appears to me he met his goal. Sounds like he did something right.

as is? i dont see much more than a self entitlement project...... perhaps a snazzy video watched on a computer can win over some people, and maybe some people feel that $14000 for a video is actually something the burning man community needs... but i dont see it.

Sounds like if you don't see it, that's your problem, not his. Your blindness is not caused by him.

and frankly? i dont care what makes yours different. because at this point, we done seen it all.. we've reached maximum capacity and ya know.. these videos dont change anything and i dont see giving people the warm fuzzies as worth all that much in terms of time/effort... it dont matter how good the video is.

Oh, you mean you're jaded. That's your problem, not his.

and what do we get?

Man, you sure have a sense of entitlement. "What do we get?" Why do you think you're owed anything? You've made, in as caustic and internet troll-y a way as possible barring swearing at him in all-caps, the fact that you don't want to donate to his Kickstarter. That's fine. So why do you ask "What do we get?" as if you're owed something?

some bullshit about how its for us, we get to watch it.. once..... twice if we're really damned bored and..... then burning man stays the same as it ever was.

Sounds like every piece of art on the playa. We see it for a few days, then it goes away, and BM happens the next year whether it was there or not. Should people stop bringing art to BM as a result? Maybe we should all sit in a circle while you regale us with tales of how we should help the community by doing something "that matters"?

want to do something for the community?

I and the others that enjoyed his video are part of the "community" too. I felt he did something for the community. You don't. That's fine.

14,000$ coulda bought lotsa /something/ that we could actually use.

Wow, again with the radical sense of entitlement. Why do you feel you're owed something by this fellow or by the people who -donated- to support his project?

theres more to giving back to the community than building some sculpture
or giving out booze
or making some fuckin documentary.

Well that's true, but there's certainly a lot more to giving back to the community than attacking someone who is celebrating Burning Man.

imagine if you used that money to help defray the costs of people who got helicoptored out!!!!!

Oh, you mean, you want him to defraud the people that -donated- money to his project by spending it on something else entirely? That's what you want? Him to commit fraud? You're quite a piece of work.

Hey, here's a suggestion: Since you're so keen to "make a difference" why don't you donate all the money you're going to spend on BM this year to people who need it? Nobody needs to go to Burning Man. Lots of people need food and clean water. Oh, what's that? You'd rather go on vacation to the playa or spend your time being a douche canoe on eplaya? Shocking.

or for some shit that actually makes a difference.

His film made a difference to me. I watched it, I enjoyed it. Difference made. Or at least, just as much difference made as every piece of art that's at Burning Man makes.

Oh, and to the OP: Your video rocked. Well done.

Hey this fucko spent the kick start on equipment he can keep.. Where it could have been rented at 1/2 price.. Now he want some one to foot the bill so he can come on location. The are photos taken from the air.. They used a kite.. There vidios were great and did not cost the burners at large a cent..

So if any thing. He can't manage money..

Sorry, I guess I missed the part of his Kickstarter pitch where he said, "I'm renting equipment" and then went ahead and bought it.

I guess I also missed the part where donating to his effort was anything but voluntary.

You also missed the part where it says anything at all about renting gear - because it doesn't. Given the amount being asked for and the budget that's been shared, it seems fair to assume it's for the purchase of gear.

Regardless, people are welcome to either support it or ignore it at their leisure. And they're welcome to question the poster about the project - it goes hand in hand with posting a public thread asking for help. Hopefully Roy will check the thread regularly and be able to respond to the questions raised.

Please play nice.
