Popsicles on the Playa

Postby Kirby82 » Wed May 08, 2013 3:13 pm

Hey gang!

Kirby here,

My girlfriend and I came up with an idea to gift this year and wanted to kinda get some suggestions from the community. We are going to be launching a kickstarter soon. I just wanted to get people's ideas to make sure we are going to bring the stuff that BR Citizens really want. We decided to bring the frozen fruit bars and some asian brand of otter pops. We have an ice cream cart and going to push it around. Still figuring out if we should do music, get bells, light it up and do night runs. I would love to hear any suggestions you guys might have that can make this the perfect gift!

Yea, and we can get thousands of ottor pops for cheap. We just want to bring really good popsicles with real fruit in it. Last year we brought a box and it was AMAZING on wednesday. Kinda wanted to share that deliciousness with everyone!

if youre bringing REAL fruit and home made stuff it opens a huge can of worms, youll need to do health dept inspections and pay for a permit to serve food.

if you serve unopened flav or ice (sometimes known as otter pops in other plaes in america) you neednt have any special inspections or health dept stuff.

you should read all about serving food safely on the playa.

scroll down and read all the things in the two sections with FLAMES relating to burning man.

that's going to be next years venture. We are going to serve pre packaged popsicles this year. like the ones that ice cream trucks or the guys with the ice cream carts sell. We did look into making our own for this year, but i think we are going to take the easy route and just buy them.

Moved this from 2013 Share Resources (rideshares, gifting materials, sharing on shipping, etc) to 2013 Art & Performance, as there are a lot of people discussing their 2013 ideas here. This one was hard to categorize, though.

If you begin a Kickstarter, please post about it in "Support a Project", and be ready for constructive and non-constructive criticism. You are not obligated to respond to either, although some of the constructive stuff may be worth thinking about.

If the Kickstarter doesn't work, perhaps pool what $$ you can, go to Costco or similar, and gift on a scale you can afford on your own. This is just one person's opinion, but doesn't make it any less special if you gift 25 or 50 people instead of 250 (or whatever). My rideshare Motsky brought boxes of Nutty Buddies, and ice cream bars, and Dreyer's fruit bars, etc, gave out some of them during Burn week, then let me help him give them away during Exodus and during long road maintenance stops in Southern Oregon. We'd get stopped for 20-25 minutes. People were really surprised to have folks walk up to their car and give 'em ice cream in the stultifying heat. :) It was so fun!

I think people would accept ice cream at any time of day--but the daytime cannot be beat.

You might also ask around your circle of friends and family and see if someone has a card to go to Restaurant Depot or other wholesale food supplier.

It can be someone you don't expect. Even the local PTA mothers have one.

thats a good idea, thanks savannah. We already have a contact for the ice pops. its only 60 for 1000. so worst case we have a ton of ice pops! and i dont think anyone will be disappointed in that!

i think i might have to save some for the exodus. That sounds awesome!

Ohhh, yeah. In my neck of the woods there's a restaurant supply place called Cash & Carry. I don't know if they have ice cream in bar form, but their espresso syrups are literally $3 for a wine-sized bottle. That's less than half price. I don't even have to have a membership card.

Bag of 200 littleneck clams for 40 bucks at the depot. I use my CFO's card, she's the PTA mom. Cook that up at a bbq in the summer and people go nuts.

It is, I promise! . . . Most people, especially virgins, pack their food--and sometimes even beverages--away during Exodus, not realizing how long it's going to be. And everyone's tired . . . chilled beverages or Sudden Ice Cream Surprise Attack is a great thing.

I see nice people wandering the lanes (carefully) serving coffee, too. That's a kindness.

I am not here to discuss financial thing or ask for all of you to contribute to my kickstarter. My goal here is to gather ideas such as handing out popsicles durring exodus. things that i may not have thought about.

I've brought and handed out popsicles at Burning Man... they go over best during the day when it's hot (so do frosty blended margaritas!).
They have a wrapper and a stick - potential moop - I guess no naked people get popsicles. No pockets...

We gift hundreds of "generic" Otter Pops, and they run about a nickle apiece. Admittedly we have a freezer in the RV, but Wildman brings along liquid nitrogen and that stuff freezes Otter Pops in about 10 seconds flat. Not to mention grapes (seedless) which, when flash frozen, are delicious. We're going to do a "Tour de Franzia" on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, serving Franzia wine to our neighbors and Wildman's bringing his portable liquid nitrogen freeze apperatus and gift frozen grapes, OPs, etc. So it's not that hard to do.

Last year, on a hot and dusty afternoon out in the "conditions", I was hot, tired and wandering aimlessly. Someone pedaled up on a bike pulling a small trailer and stopped me. He simply handed me this lime otter-pop and pedaled away. It was awesome. I tell this story to my friends all the time, and then show them the photo. That simple act will stay with me forever. Thank you to whoever that was. Priceless.

Moving this over to Food and Drink since the Preparation board is a better fit than Art & Performance.

If you're asking what would make it the perfect gift, speaking personally I'd have to say not asking other people to pay for it. It's not necessary to use the most deluxe popsicle on the market, or to purchase and sort our refrigeration for thousands of them. If you do go down that road, please make sure to read and follow the guidelines on fundraising on ePlaya. And of course, don't forget to sort out the health permit stuff as well.

As a treat, I don't know that they're really ideal (at least to me). I've probably turned down half the very kind offers of popsicles or otter pops that I've received, and trash/sticky hands are almost always a bonus gift that ride along. But do something that you're passionate about, and ideally that you have the resources with which to provide.

Would that I would have remembered that the Food & Drink forum existed.

I'm tired.

Isn't a Popsicle on the playa just another word for koolaid? Oh, wait...I guess you're going to keep 'em frozen...somehow.
