Saw Andrew Solomom interviewed on charlie rose about this book Far From the Tree.
Sounds interesting.
“Far From the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity.”
“Difference unites us,” he concludes. “The exceptional is ubiquitous; to be entirely typical is the rare and lonely state.”

Solomon’s startling proposition is that diversity is what unites us all. He writes about families coping with deafness, dwarfism, Down syndrome, autism, schizophrenia, multiple severe disabilities, with children who are prodigies, who are conceived in rape, who become criminals, who are transgender.

He also wrote The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression.

Just finished The Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikes and Why. It's not quite as overly sensational as it sounds. Discusses Denial, Deliberation and "The Decisive Moment", & follows the survivors of several disasters (9/11, nightclub fires, stampedes at Hajj, plane crashes) and what kept them alive, also discusses crowd behavior and the nature of panic, & other interesting stuff. Decent read.

The Psychopath Test was a decent read! You might also like . . .

Bad Boys, Bad Men
The Sociopath Next Door
Snakes in Suits

(Yes, I'm fascinated by personality disorders.)

Bad Boys, Bad Men might be the best of those. It's case studies in antisocial personality disorder, which are uncommon.

We have little reading fads and associated funny behaviours in our house (that's Bumble and I) is there a name for that?

We met a woman the other day who is a psychotherapist and that freaked the Bumbler out significantly*... if she reads these books I am not looking forward to the next fad.

*not for any good reason btw - they only talked about diving but Bumble wondered if she was analysing her

Could be (not qualified to know) but not in this case: Bumble is my wife and Eplaya lurker Emma.

Named after my childhood shaggy dog with a waggy tail.

Or... yes it is; tampons, copious amounts of bitter, multiple public school boys, a badger, weasel and orifices

I think it's a wonderful name, Bumble.

We used to have a local word here - bamble, as in, to go bambling, to bamble.
Combined from ramble and stumble, I think, maybe bumbling too, fairly obsolete usage here.
I'm sure no illegal activity was involved though.

Thanks Savannah, have put on reading list!

In mean time I've read The metamorphosis by Kafka - and although a good story, that could be interpreted in many ways I DON'T think it is the most "seminal work of he 20th century"

So now I'm reading "Lionel Asbo: State of England", by Martin Amis. Starts off with a 15 year old boy, writing to a news paper's agony aunt about sleeping with his Grandmother!!! Chapter one, can it get weirder?

I am still diagnosing psychopaths all the time:)
And turtleburp, it's within the mental crazy world literature fad I'm currently in

I think Kafka's Trial is far creepier than Metamorphosis, and a more important work.
It has its points about change in general though.

In the same vein, I recently saw the early bbc performance of 1984, so effectively done it upset people in 1954.
Peter Cushing, produced by Rudolph Cartier who had fled the nazis, it is a superb interpretation.
It's been many years since I read the book, but i think it may be becoming more important as years go by, rather than less, especially with his emphasis on thought control by limiting language.

I'm going to have to re-read it, but it has come back to me surprisingly well.
