Shouldn't Burning Man be more like ePlaya?

Postby uncle sticky » Mon Apr 22, 2013 9:50 am

Usually when some noobie comes on here and gets the typical snark-fest welcome, there's at least one kind soul who dishes out the "burning man is not like eplaya, the people out there are much nicer." I say the event would be better if there was less Peace and Love and more in person snark, fewer love hammocks and more art installs that are the in the flesh version of an internet trolling post. It's not that we're too mean, it's that Burning Man has gotten too nice.

Maybe silliness and live-action thread drift is what people want on the playa.

It doesn't mean you shouldn't open Snark Ministries, put out a sandwich board, and have daily services at 10 and 2.

Or waiting for your turn to get in that spinning LED tube. Hint: there's no line, just barge your damn fur-coat-wearing fatass in there after only being there a few minutes. Damn savages.

We had a guy two camps over from us would sit out in his little camp chair and insult people going by. Most people reacted well. Meaning they flipped him off or got into little wars with him. It was funny most of the time but occasionally you could see that the receiving person didn't receive so well.

I think Burning Man is what you make of it. Every year I hear stories about people who went and had a terrible time, or were somehow put off by some experience and they just didn't connect and felt like people weren't all that nice.

Some people walk down the street and some guy starts shouting at them with a bullhorn, and they laugh their asses off or maybe even stop and say hello or share a drink. Others will pass the same guy and the guy with the bullhorn ruins their day.

I consider ePlaya snark to be the virtual equivalent of the guy with the bullhorn.

Here's a little trick I use: I'm in on all the jokes, not on the outside getting reamed. I try it anyway.

true story.

way back in 19 dickety 7' i remember, bruno had bought the rights to the word "ninety" so we had to say dickety.

anyway.

where was i....oh yeah....true story.

one morning, i think it was saturday, maybe sunday, somewhere around 730-800.....after sunrise, so everyone had pretty much settled in after a night of serious fucked upperery and were either sleeping or naked, or having sex, or all three, and then it happened.

some fucking ASSHOLE with a bullhorn duct-taped to his hard hat was marching up and down berating, cajoling, taunting the poor people in tents and other structures..

"come out motherfuckers.....come out and party with me.....sure, you've been out all night having good time, fucking around, taking drugs, and now its fucking payback time.....now I WANNA PARTY and you're all gonna have to deal with it...."

he started cursing, and making fart noises, and bad jokes and people were screaming at him to go away and shut up but everyone was to tired or having sex or naked or asleep so this went on for like 10 minutes.

finally the curses gave way to giggles as he said the stupidest shit ever, but it was funny...

then after another few more rounds of knock knock jokes someone came out and said "If i come out and party with you will you shut the fuck up?" and then more people came out, and before too long, someone brought out fresh coffee, a small sound system got moving (remember, this was 97', things were different, we had to use hamsters, and richard gere for power) and it was on.....Morning Boogaloo...

it was hilarious....the interplay of people screaming from the tents, the bullhorn, the threats, the laughter, and finally....

the party.

it's part of the city, love it, hate it, indifferent, it is there, and it's here as well.

you cant take the caco out of Cacophony without leaving just phony...

or insert some other bullshit that sounds deep....*here*.....

now get the fuck off of my lawn.

We can't just bust heads the way we used to. So, I was heading to Brunoville, which is what they used to call Center Camp, and it used to cost a nickel to ride on the art car...

YES!!!!!!

OH HELL YES.

WE NEED A MODERATION TEAM FOR THE PLAYA.. to protect us all from the various unpleasant things.. such as the objectionable art !!! the uncomfortable truths !! and and.. and. of course..the offensive remarks!!!

we need to have ACTIVE ENFORCEMENT of the terms and conditions on the ticket.. of the stuff in the survival guide... and, of course, of some newly drafted community guidelines.

the rangers arent really bringing out the ePlaya experience.

we need to make burning man more like ePlaya.
