The music is constant. The thump thump thump becomes a part of your world. When we hit Fernley our first night out I could not sleep. It was so quiet.

Wasn't that you who recognized me & yelled my name as I drove up two days before Gates last year? I'd been really excited to have suddenly spotted the Dye with Dignity sign but hadn't been able to discern faces sitting in the shade yet. Well--I think it was you.

Either way--nothing better than hearing a friend call your name.

Also in 2007, a camp across the street cranked up Sheena Easton's "Morning Train" every morning at 9 o'clock. This cheerful wake-up ritual was a highlight of the event for all 25 of us. Would I care to listen to that song the rest of the year? Heck no. But it was perfect for the situation.

one of my fav's too.......but they must have started on my end of town because it was usually about sunrise.

on Looneytunes MV (blue stagecoach), we play almost exclusively 60's to 80's rock, Doors, Stones, Led Zep. etc...........

and of course, I love to hear the soft moans and gasp as I pleasure a lover.........

Simon and Garfunkel
The Pixies (Including Frank Black and The Breeders)
The Knife
Stan Getz/Joao Gilberto - (I like to relax/sleep to samba and Bossa Nova.)
BMIR - In the mornings, around 3pm, I like to get up and do some yurtwork. Clean, sweep, organize... I generally flick on the radio and listen to whatever weirdness they have going on.

Since everyone keeps telling me I should, I keep listening to see if I can hear the sound of one hand clapping.
I figure if I'm ever going to hear it, the playa is where it's going to happen.

I am glad this thread has gone the way it has. These descriptions are much more interesting than you guys saying some of your favorite bands.

(but thank you to those who are saying favorite bands! I'm definitely gonna check out those samba/bossa nova artists. thats a genre I always enjoy, but know nothing about)

The discussions of Chinese military techniques of the 5th century are a real stand-out. I think it's... what... two Ph.D.s have been awarded on theses drawing from that material.

Hey! I gave you my answer on the first page. Beige noise. You're the one that accused us en masse of not listening to music.

Another name for the samba set, Jobim. Between Jobim and Gilberto you'll pretty much exhaust the body of samba and bossa nova.

Drives my son nuts. He says it sounds like hold music.

A word to the wise.
This is what you face if you ask for musical recommendations from me:
Finntroll, Klezmatics, Danial Kahn and the Painted Bird, Red Army Chorus, Brave Combo, Polkestra (I cannot over emphasize Polkestra), Amanda Palmer/Dresden Dolls, Gilbert and Sullivan, the Damned, maybe the Stranglers, Brave Old World, Leningrad Cowboys, the Comedian Harmonists, Big Lou's Polka Casserole, Max Raabe and the Palast Orchestra, Club Foot Orchestra, Slade, Suzi Quatro, T. Rex, Limpopo/Raving Polka (also Red Elvises, but I don't like them in that form as much), the Tubes, Nina Hagen, the Pogues, Meshugga Beach Party, Rammstein, Carmina Burana, Hank Williams, Shostakovich's Nose, Spinal Tap, the Rutles. Throw in some Cajunto, and a few random compliation albums. Camper van Beethoven, caberet, threepenny opera, zydeco, Wall of Voodoo, DEVO, and sound effects to taste. Random play to your heart's delight.

Depending on the day, of course.
