Any word on playa conditions for 2013?

Postby Hondovious » Mon Apr 01, 2013 5:55 pm

Anyone know if there was much snow, or if it was ever packed down at all? Searched and couldn't find a topic for this year..

Northern nevada is experiencing the 3rd driest jan-mar since 1966. So unless we get a late wet spring its going to be as dry as a popcorn fart

The fall started out pretty damp, but not much since. May get a chance to drive thru that area in a few weeks and check it out.

It's not going to be a foot of fluffy powder like the surface of the moon. From what I could tell last year, it was just as dry beforehand and the playa was OK. All the major dust got kicked up and blown away before the gates opened.

Well we did get a fair amount of rain to the west at sea level... But I have no idea if that turned into snow in the mountains...

Hmm, my skier friends were definitely super happy about the amount of snow this season, so there should be plenty of snow up there still.

Question about dry as a popcorn fart: Is that terminology describing a fart that is actually as dry as popcorn or is it comparing the arid weather to a fart a person would experience after a steady diet of eating popcorn? If it is a fart as dry as the popcorn itself, would that be popped or unpopped popcorn? I assume it's implied that the steady diet of popcorn would be of the popped variety.

There were floods in Reno last fall. Does not translate into a wet winter. 200 miles north in the High Desert we've had some rain recently.

I'll be down for Rendezvous over Memorial Day. Should be snow in the mountains to the west - usually.
Wasn't last year.

I worked in a bar that served bowls of pop corn to tables (extra salty to keep them drinking).
I did find it made me fart and in a strange way although not sure if dry.
FYI & TMI it's the sharp semi popped ones you'll regret if you eat enough

I thought it was as dry as the fart that a piece of popcorn would fart.

I'm a newbie and don't presume to know how this all translates but I live in the mountains a few hours from the playa and although we had a ton of snow in November and December we have had almost no precipitation in the last three months. There is always the chance we could have a wet spring, but if that doesn't happen I'm imagining it will be a pretty dusty year... I figure the silver lining is that I'll get the full experience out there ;)

unfortunately snow at Tahoe doesnt mean snow on the playa. Sometimes the snow just seems to stop at the Ca/NV border just east of Truckee :(

Well if that's the case AND Tahoe hasn't had much snow... we are definitely in for a dusty one.

Performance art opportunity: go from camp to camp in a suit and windbreaker with a microphone, giving live weather reports.

"IT'S DUSTY!"

*stands there awkwardly for 30 seconds*

"STILL DUSTY."

*walk on to the next camp*
