@Unjohn
I saw your post about powdered butter and wondered how it worked out for you?
Is it real butter but dehydrated?
I looked online and WHEW its kinda spendy!

Thanks

Oh and @ 9ah....
I just ordered some protein bars to bring with me in my backpack and then saw your "Melted choclate in your backpack is BAD" post....
Yup the bars are chocolate! Great, I guess said bars will be in a cooler while on playa!

I'm wondering how ghee will hold up. It gets kinda liquid in my kitchen in the summer.

I have powdered butter from Augason Farms.. Ingredients: butter(cream water, salt) nonfat milk. tocopherols, ascorby palmitate.

204 tbsp 2 pounds

Mixed in hot water it is spreadable. I just use it in cooking. Or dry on pop corn..

Cost a bit.. I wanted to see how it works.. Will use it up and save some for the playa..

Put your candy bars in the cooler when traveling.. Just a gas stop and the car will warm enough to melt candy..

AntiM, I had to do a search because I had NO IDEA what ghee was!
Ah, things are now alot more clarified!

The other day I looked up Marmite and vegemite.
Im not sure if I will try either of those two but, maybe!

When I went in '05 I brought a couple cans of spaghetti-o's.
They were good right out of the can and also good on saltines, too.

I'm definately bringing BACON this time even if its the precooked kind!

Thanks for the info Unjohn.

Hate to break it to you, Martiansky, but somedays what you learn is of limited value and maybe even limited truthvalue.
Not today. This is in no way a dig at AntiM or unjohn, both of whom I respect. It just happens to be the day this occurred to me.

Wait.. you just now ordered protein bars.. to put in your backpack 6 1/2 months from now? Dude. You have time. Those things taste best when fresh. I know you're excited, but things like semi-perishable food can wait to be gathered until the time gets a little closer..

They taste like grit no matter how old they are.

Well, okay, I haven't had them more than a year or two out, but seriously, this isn't food, you don't have to worry about them.
Although, if the were in your backpack, you could eat them while watching something on playa. Distracted from protein bars is a good state.

Entirely untrue.

I eat protein bars all the time in defaultia and they most definitely do taste better when fresh primarily with the moistness value. Sure, you don't have to worry about them.. but it's definitely advisable to get them closer to the burn.

FWIW, I'm tried many types through the years and the best tasting, highest protein, lowest bad stuff is a kind they sell at Sam's Club. They're actually pretty damn good and under $1/bar. Not bad for for 30g of protein.

MyLarry used to go to the PowerBar plant in Boise all the time when he drove reefer. They'd have boxes and boxes out in the driver lounge, they could take what they wanted. Sometimes they'd give him a small case lot if there was an overrun. Fresh from the factory is wildly different. I don't like them though, I'm a granola girl. Or Larabars, I can get them at the commissary for under a buck each. They're more for pack food in case we're out and about and get the hungries.

I saw that those existed, and don't really want to try them because they probably taste way worse than I imagine. Sort of like meeting your favorite celebrity.

I picked up some ghee.. Open and use some and set it in the pantry.. Been using some for the last two weeks.. Sitting out in 65 degrees it seem to do well.. So from that, I plan to have this butter on the playa..

Powdered butter? Real butter holds up just fine in your cooler. I used to use butterbuds when I was a diehard highcountry backpacker, but heck, real butter is way better and does fine in the cooler. Don't overthink the food. As for bacon, I adore it, and took a lot last time. I ended up craving steak. what can i say? So this time I'm taking steak AND bacon. Obviously I'm not a vegetarian, even though I can cook bomb veg food. I'm taking Coleman's hot dogs too, because the best damn thing I had in BRC last time was a hot dog. I had a ball talking to the dreadlocked young couple behind me in line. They came with a vegan bus and by day 4 were utterly desperate for some kind of disgusting meat. There was a scout group grilling hot dogs. Made my day, even though I had great food in my cooler. I followed up with a sno cone just down the block, accompanied by a nice conversation on a couch.

I've also decided to bring a couple of lamb chops, because I adore lamb. Of course, I'm also one of those strange people who thinks that kale is as great as lamb, or at least close.
