So what you guys are saying, is that I should quietly explain to the officer why it is that I'm doing what I'm doing, and that I'm really not THAT guilty?

There are only 3 questions to choose from when responding to an officer of the law:

Am I under arrest? No, leave immediately

Am I being detained? No, leave immediately
