It sure looks to be a completely different scenario than last year.

of course i am... its hard to avoid discussing the talk of the town........ my own posts are over 30% in a ticket forum of some sort.

and what IS the talk of the town?!

we could look at the 'this years event' forums like in the 'years past' viewforum.php?f=260

2012: total posts that werent in the 'tickets' section: 18307, total topics: 1737
2012: total posts about tickets: 29366, total topics: 2409

(ticket discussion accounted for about 62% of the discussion in the 2012 forum)

2011: total posts that werent in the 'tickets' section: 31284, total topics: 2816
2011: total posts about tickets: 11861, total topics: 1323

(ticket discussion accounted for about 26% of the discussion in the 2011 forum)

2010: total posts that werent in the 'tickets' section: 14038, total topics: 1407
2010: total posts about tickets: 3627, total topics: 860

(ticket discussion accounted for about 20% of the discussion in the 2010 forum)

2005: total posts that werent in the 'tickets' section: 7322, total topics: 609
2005: total posts about tickets: 1557, total topics: 483

(ticket discussion accounted for about 17% of the discussion in the 2005 forum)

(2013: total posts that werent in the tickets section: 4187, total topics: 121
2013: total posts about tickets: 2128, total topics: 53)

(ticket discussion so far this year: about 35% of the 2013 forum.)

it's understandable the obsession would rise as the scarcity of resources impacted our community.. but the obsession with the ME TOO type posts is confounding...... who the fuck are we collecting data for with these DID YOU GET A TICKET? polls and threads ?

something certainly is different.

does it have a positive impact on this eplaya community ?

a negative impact on this community ?

does it have a positive impact on the perceptions of newcomers here ?
negative?

who knows!

but theres certainly a lot fewer discussions going on in the 'event' forums that are about non-buying-a-ticket related things.. and i would have to guess that it probably aint for the better.

carry-on.

I know - it's so weird. It's almost like something changed about the tickets after 2011, like they actually became something people talked about and had to actively pursue instead of just going to a local costume- or head- shop & buying whenever they felt like, or, hell, just bought at the Gate if they needed. Hmmm...

Nope. Can't think of a thing.

You type that you "understand" about the scarcity of tickets, yet in the very next part of the sentence say you're confounded by how much it's affected the community. There appears to be a disconnect.

Tickets have become such an obsession with a lot of people because:

A) It's new.
The event existed for 24 (25?) years without selling out. People didn't have to think about their tickets, at all, except about the price - you could buy tickets at local stores, you could mail in for them, you could buy them online, you could buy them at the Gate. The only posts were the "god the first day of sales sucked", "what tier did you get", and "do you have a playa miracle ticket" types.

Those of us on the board when they sold out that first time remember how people freaked - regardless of how many subtle warnings the Org had put out trying to alert Burners without alerting scalpers. Last year was the first year we entered the Burn in a sell-out status, and the Lottery caused issues that then had to be solved, all of which generated tons of posts. This is only the second Burn we're entering from the beginning as a probable sell out, of course people are worried about getting a ticket, it's human nature.

B) It's the only world the newbies have known.
Anyone who started the event in 2011 or later is going to have "sell out" and "tickets" as a major, major thing on their agendas, unlike those of us who started earlier. It's easy for us to be comfortable in knowing that tickets will be available in late-July/August, we've seen it before, we know the trends. They don't, so seeing the tickets are "sold out" generates a lot of anxiety old-timers may not have, since we know the difference between "sold out" and "unavailable from the source, but will have a healthy at-cost aftermarket in August".

C) Those 3rd party ticket sites.
Again, old timers know they're selling 'tickets ' they don't have, with delivery dates usually in mid-late August so they can buy them when people start selling in July/Aug & then ship to the suckers they got to pay $600+ in Feb or March, but to a new person it's "how did they get tickets when I couldn't" and they post about it.

D)Read "A" again.

Since I have so many things going on this year, I am opted into the 'shit fuck I can't go' last minute sale where people who can't go need to get rid of tickets the last couple of weeks before the event.

I am making a serious effort to move back to my homeland (Californiaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!)

And that alone is an adventure in and of itself that takes a lot of planning and resources so when I get to CA and the bridge to burning man 2013 manifests, I will oblige by crossing it.

Butfor (What's a butfor?) now,

Shit fuck shit, I can't go :coffee: :coffee:

Only on eplaya could a genteel thread such as this one one turn into a pissing match. Where's the Thunderdome when you need it?

Thank you for sharing that photo. I didn't make it to BRC in '09 and thus I had no idea that Thunderdome got hacked that year.
