2013 Theme - Cargo Cult - thoughts?

Cargo Cult - Who is John Frum? He is known to us by many names, this Visitor from Elsewhere, dispenser of endless abundance and wielder of mysterious technologies: John Frum, Quetzalcoatl, Osiris, "Bob." His cargo is splendid, his generosity boundless, his motives beyond our understanding. But across the ages and around the world, the stories all agree: one day he will return, bearing great gifts. Our theme this year asks three related questions; who is John Frum, where is he really from, and where, on spaceship Earth, are we all going?

This is a very interesting thread. Despite the unfortunate flamers, look at the results:
Posters have compared the cargo cult to : Calvinism, Charismatic Christianity, American politics, and personal ambiguities.
Any theme that causes that much concern in even a few people has advanced the joint consciousness of the world.

But I am wondering, how do you resolve the inherent conflict between extreme self reliance, and cargo cults of any society?
In the former - you get what you build. In the latter, you get a gift from XXX, based on the singular effort of faith.

Somehow, I can't see the two reconciled. Its a bit of oil and water.
So maybe the idea is - make salad?
Let GOOD win!

My art work/camp and will be designed as a cult member.. Waiting for the gifts from the gods of plenty.. I must be self reliant until I can attract the gifts to my cargo port.

Well then, I have to assume that very few people are practicing "extreme self relience" at Burning man. Am I right.

I am a newbie wannabe... so this isn't from an authoritative source.
But...
Extreme self reliance is ...
ANTI-COMMERCIAL
I couldn't find a home entertainment center that I liked at a reasonable price, so I made one... and its perfect. :)
STAND ALONE
Camping, bring everything you need, plus spares, and don't depend on the environment or others to bail you out. No AAA Travel Club.
MAKE DO WITH WHAT YOU HAVE
Ran out of pen and paper once, wrote a phone number on the counter in mustard.
PLAN FOR ADVERSITY
Some people invest in futures, I invest in chickens. If the world goes to heck, I can still eat eggs.
SHARE/HELP OTHERS
We have hurricanes regularly, its just flat bad manners to pass someone up that you could help and fail to.
Let GOOD win!

ok for instance

today i decided i wanted chopped liver and crackers to eat. i *could* have gone to publix and purchased a tub of chopped liver and a box of ritz crackers.

but i decided to be radically self reliant. so i made my own chopped liver and crackers from scratch.

of course that meant i had to go to publix to buy liver onions eggs mayo flour salt oil and sugar....
but still.

"Extreme" self-reliance means I shit everything I need out of my own butt. I don't even need sunlight or air or water. These things I can create out of my own imagination alone. I don't even need gravity, I can float free in space and be happy. ;)

Is that extreme enough? That's the answer to the question.

What I think you are asking is how extreme do people generally get on the playa?, or how extreme can you get away with? or how extreme is absolutely necessary? or how can I demonstrate self-reliance in an extreme way?

Many of us buy our shelter from The Home Depot or similar place, or dumpster dive, in which case we are relying on something outside of ourselves. Even if you built a Paiute Wickiyup, you'd be dependent on the plants you harvested from the Earth.

To bring it back to the Theme, which is what you may be really asking, can we ever be truly free of John Frum's Cargo?

So Dugly,

By your def. I would have to hunt and kill my own meat.

Well I'm old and slow.. Let that be a warning to parents that bring very young children to the playa..
