That or Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, and Steve Buscemi saved us. Steve ended up not being as helpful as we'd hoped…

I thought that it was a team up between the Doctor and Buffy.

A prediction made a few thousand years ago off by a day or so? Depends upon how good their computers were, I guess.

Maybe the Mayans weren't so good at predicting the future after all. They sure didn't see the spanish coming.

What makes their calendar so fascinating is that they weren't predicting the future at all in a soothsayer/prophet kind of way. Sure, they had a religious side and did the whole bloody sacrifice thing and called out to the gods like nobody's business, but they kept their math and astronomy separate from that. And they had things like eclipses and alignments and processions and all that worked out in crazy levels of detail - levels we've only really begun to understand in the last decade or two (with the aid of computers). It's also worth pointing out that the Spanish arrived several centuries after the collapse of the Mayan empire.

The Mayan calendar only marked yesterday as the end, and it was the lack of anything going beyond that date that had people jumping to conclusions. But the recently discovered calendar workshop site paints a different picture. The reason nothing went beyond yesterday is more likely because that was the end of that cycle, and they hadn't yet finished the next one before their civilization fell. Evidence suggests that they were continuing to work out the solstices, eclipses, alignments, and so on for several more baktuns.

I guess it's back to planning for the zombie apocalypse and natural disasters :)

Minor historical quibble: there was no "Mayan empire". There were city-states, there were kingdoms, there were even some entities you might call an empire, but none of them included all the Mayan cities, and for most of their history there was rivalry between different cities/kingdoms for dominance (possibly one of the factors, along with prolonged drought, that caused the collapse of the Classic Maya cities).

There were also still thriving Mayan cities when the Spanish arrived, mostly on the north coast of the Yucatan. The end of the Classic period didn't signal the end of the Mayan cities any more than the end of Rome signaled the end of European ones.

There was also no "Aztec Empire", but that's a different quibble...

...and there go trilobyte and Eric injecting reality and accuracy into my end of the world paranoia! Sheesh! :D

In more serious moments, I did point out to some people that the Mayans had come out with a calendar for a few thousand year cycle, and probably had just figured that, by the time the current calendar ran out, someone should have finished a new one! And now I see, thanks to trilobyte, that I was right, and someone was working on the next one.

And, dammit!, I still need to come up with about $10,000 - $15,000 or so so I can get started on my mobile zombie survival fortress!

I'd call it an empire in the same sense that you could use the term for the Romans and the Egyptians and the… During the classic period as the empire expanded, you can bet the local tribes were assimilated or dealt with. They grew, they prospered, they flourished and had quite an influence, and then they fizzled. Some cities carried on, some wound up being reclaimed by the jungle and were something of a surprise when 'discovered' by the Spanish.

Sorry to burst the bubble, BAS ;) But hey, for what it's worth history and facts and science provide plenty rich material to fuel paranoia.

I only just realized the world as we know it is still standing, in contrast to the most recent expiration date.

Every day is new and exciting :) we can be limited by the implied expectations of society, or discard that BS and be ourselves.

The main thing I have learned from becoming a burner is that I am limited by my imagination.

I think I will go into my basement and rummage through my burning man bins - just to touch playa dust and get that smell I have grown to love....
