Look, up in the sky...

…it's a bird! It's a plane! It's… little chunks of rocks burning up in the atmosphere!

Tonight and tomorrow mark the peak of the Geminid meteor shower, with an estimated 50 visible objects per hour. The image above is from NASA, and plots the orbital paths of 56 Geminid fireballs spotted in the sky last night (yellowish are from the Geminids, bluish are from random space debris). NASA says we may get a bonus, as a new meteor shower (courtesy comet Wirtanen) may be appearing and adding another 30 objects per hour. Away from the lights of the city is best, but if the skies are clear you may even see a few in areas that have a lot of light pollution.

Looks like it could be a pretty good one this year. I think I'll give it a shot for awhile this evening..

so many wishes...

The day will come when, after harnessing the ether, the winds, the tides, gravitation, we shall harness for God the energies of love. And, on that day, for the second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire.

*shuffles in and shakes off the cold*

Yep, a pretty good night here in the east. Clear skies, and able to see the Milky Way. I saw probably around 45 to 50 meteors. Maybe 15 good ones. These seem to be the long and relatively slow moving variety (not the blink of an eye kind) ...so all the better!

I wished for a Burning Man ticket! :D

After so many disappointments, I never bother checking to see the current "shower of the century/decade/year". These showers are always timed with overcast nights, and this will be no exception. Why can't they be around, you know, August 29th or so?
