Theme Predictions for 2013

Cargo Cult - Who is John Frum? He is known to us by many names, this Visitor from Elsewhere, dispenser of endless abundance and wielder of mysterious technologies: John Frum, Quetzalcoatl, Osiris, "Bob." His cargo is splendid, his generosity boundless, his motives beyond our understanding. But across the ages and around the world, the stories all agree: one day he will return, bearing great gifts. Our theme this year asks three related questions; who is John Frum, where is he really from, and where, on spaceship Earth, are we all going?

It's a reference to The Gods Must Be Crazy. It's a film in which a glass coke bottle falls to earth from a plane, and fighting over its uses as a tool and toy causes discord in a Bushman's tribe, so he goes on a quest to get rid of the bottle.

I only saw it when I was a kid, but I remember the film being quite good.

Whatever the chosen theme is, I predict that the llc will make fools of themselves by forbidding the most popular and obvious manifestation thereof on August 15. Possibly by evoking 9/11.

That is so unbelievably pathetic--banning drag from your Drag Cruise.

However, restaurants that used to refuse to seat African-Americans would still employ them in the kitchens, and we're all proud of that legacy, aren't we?

Are we humans really all that certain that we are superior to animals? Or even that we are more intelligent?

Screw it! I'm going back to the trees!

Carnival did cave. I'm not surprised. I wonder if that travel agency will ever recover...

And I'd better thank jk for putting me on the trail of that story.

As for Denny's and Cracker Barrell and the rest of that crowd...

That was only in my memory of things that happened when I was a grown up... I cannot imagine a whole way of life where that's normal. And yet, I know it was...
