Octayurt questions

Postby aij441 » Wed Oct 24, 2012 3:12 pm

I'm going to build an 8ft. tall Octayurt for 2013 and wondered if anyone could answer a few questions. I have searched for info but have only found info on how to build it. I plan on building a 5 gal. bucket evaporation cooler as well.

1. How many cubic feet is it? The foot print is 9.66' across, 8.4' tall at the peak and 77.25 sq. ft.
2. How big of a fan do I need for this size of yurt?
3. What kind of venting is required? Has anyone tried a solar chimney with this design?
Thanks for any help you can give!

Multiply width and breadth to get your square (in this case 77.25) and multiply the product with the height to get the cubic feet.

The approximate volume of your octayurt can be derived by considering it as two parts..
the cylinder at the base (though in reality it is an octagonal shape) and the cone that sits atop it (also not a true cone)

Cylinder is 3.14 x radius squared x height of side wall

PLUS..

Cone is 1/3 of 3.14 x radius squared x height of roof starting from top of side wall (base of cone) to the peak

While your shapes don't have perfectly circular bases, this should get you plenty close enough for your purpose

..and good luck with your yurt, I use one too, they rock!

From the department of excessive mathematics...

Assuming that the octayurt design is a regular octagonal pyramid on top of a regular octagonal prism, then the exact volume of the yurt with prism (wall) height h1, pyramid (wall-top to roof-top) height h2, and side length s is:

V = ( 1 + sqrt(2) ) * s^2 * ( 2 * h1 + 2/3 * h2 )

Burner von braun's approximation will overestimate the volume by about 10% if you define the radius as the distance from the center of the yurt floor to the meeting point of two sides (circumradius). If you treat the radius as the distance from the center to the middle of a side (apothem) it will underestimate the volume by about 5%. It is a good approximation for a polygonal shape with so many sides.

Assuming a side length of 4', wall height of 4', and roof height of 4.4', your yurt will have a volume of approximately 422 cubic feet.

And after particularly grizzly thought experiment, I estimate the capacity to store between 5000 to 5500 actual feet.

Build a scale model out of stiff cardboard or scrap foamcore, turn it upside-down, line it with a plastic bag, fill with water to the rim (ie, the bottom of the model), weigh the water on a kitchen scale, convert to volume using a unit weight of water equal to 62.4 lbs per cubic foot. Alternatively, fill it with clean dry sand and compare to the weight of sand in a box or other container of known volume. Either way, do it a few times and take an average. Mind the meniscus.

If you really end up bringing Octoyurt, take some pics with some vaseline on the lens and maybe you can talk a girlie magazine into doing a spread.

Ok, I know that there were 16 feet in an OctoMom.

You guys are assuming that the structure will actually be the same size and shape once it's built on playa.
Does that ever happen?
