APOKLIPTIKA 2013

Post by Lassen Forge » Tue Oct 02, 2012 4:59 am

After some internal discussion, a few of us who feel our camp kicked serious ass last year (and has for years) have decided our camp was not up for sale, return, lease, or takeover, either thematicaly or physically. This message will change in the next day or 2, but suffice it to say, that contrary to the former announcements and drama-causing post-playa Bulldung, Apokiliptika SHALL return in 2013. We have a new general secretary, we have a vision, we have the tenacity of Putin, and most of all we have DOOM!

Bringing doom to the playa - since 2005.

Will all the thematic set content be rebuilt from scratch then?

..or loaned/leased from the original owner?

Ummm... Clarification time. (and stepping out of character to do so - sorry)

The camp is autonomous. It has its own infrastructure. The "original owner" was a group of 4 who thought it up in 2004, and brought (IIRC) 13 burners together to form the camp back in 2005 - those 13 (or so) are the "original owners".

The person running the camp before me (eg Killbuck) walked away from it after 2011, partially from burnout and more importantly, to start his own thing. When he did, he turned it over to yours truly. He may regret that choice, but it was his to make. Some may not have liked my running the camp, and that's OK. As of a few days ago, we've had someone step up to volunteer to bring Apokliptika to the playa in 2013, not as some changed theme whatever, but continuing what we've been doing since 2005. Because of this, I (and I hope some of the other campers) am (are?) giving him 110% support of his mission NOT to let OUR camp die, or be suborned into some other thing not even close to our theme, and while I am not taking a leadership role in 2013 (or likely any other role - personal issues unrelated to the camp) his vision remains true to the one we had back in 2005. He sees what we can become - and more. MUCH more.

Some people were not happy with our camp last year, and decided, instead of forming their own camp, to arbitrarily change our theme, creating a LOT of drama (which people saw unfold here, sadly). This was new to us - We've had many of our former members leave for other camps over the years (or start their own), and do amazing, non-Apokliptika things. Everything from helping launch Playawaste Raiders to, hell, Georgie Boy. While some tried to steer the theme to something... else... no one tried (until this year) a Coup d'etat.

The bottom line is this. Apokliptika has been, and will continue to be, a kick ass and successful camp, as long as we stay TRUE to what we bring to the playa. Changing that will only dilute and weaken the camp (as it almost did a few years ago). Those who want to do another theme - need to do what everyone else does, do the right thing, and start themselves a new camp.

This is the line in the sand: The drama ends... here and now. You don't like the theme, you want to cut and run - - then do something else, and walk away. Period. And take this dramatic crap with you - we neither want it nor do we need it.

Thanks...
Susanne, AKA bb Sue, Secretary General (2012), Apokliptika.

I don't think BBSue is claiming that Apokliptika was responsible for starting the Playawaste Raiders, I think she is saying that members of Apok left to help start the Raiders, which is true but might sound misleading.

Less than half of the members of the Raiders in 2009(the first year) left Apok because they were unhappy about how it was being run.

It is true, someone (me) is stepping up to continue Apokiliptika for 2013. This is of course dependent on my getting some help in doing this as I might be spending a lot of my time in Europe this coming year which will mean that I definitely am going to need some local help out of Reno and/or SF.

Right now the plan is to try and sort out the camp gear from individual's stuff that all somehow go put into one storage unit in Reno. Camp dues this year will help to pay for the storage unit as well as the normal costs on playa. The goal is to maintain our awesome themed frontage along with shared kitchen, showers, evaporator/greywater pond, and maybe camp porto-pottie again depending on budget.

Which brings me to the biggest change this year. We are going to have a more council style leadership system with leaders for key areas and those representatives will then vote on camp decisions that affect the entire camp. We are in the process of figuring out a BUDGET for the coming year and camp dues will be only used to cover items in the budget.

The following positions are currently needed:
* Kommander of Logistics - in charge of keeping track of supplies, gear, and arranging transport. Overseas [sic] purchasing, procurement, delivery, and mooping.
* Director of Intoxication - in charge of all aspects of Kantina including design, setup/tear-down, training bartenders (in proper vodka methods and fake Russian accents), instilling Doom in patrons
* Doomsayer - overseas and produces all doom in the Doom Dome. Helps find, schedule, and coordinate Doom Activites including interrogations, workshops, conscription, public floggings, and heckling and threatening of inferiors.
* Activities Director - helps find appropriate ways to keep children entertained with meals and naps provided as needed Err, wrong camp... Ensures that camp activities are listed in Who/What/When, promotes activities on eplaya, maintains master schedule or personnel to shifts, allows maximum doom while having fun in an inhospitable dessert.
* Director of Misinformation and Media - promotes camp and works to entice new conscriptees. On playa runs WTF radio and video services showing great Soviet Media to all. Schedules DJs and musical acts and ensures equipment and space are setup for all media related duties.

HERE COMES THE DOOM! and LONG LIVE THE MITT!

Comrade Sue,Your frank and candid revelations concerning Apokoliptika stir memories of the long time ties between our revolutionary and socialist camps.
We as Club Verboten and now as Club Neu have followed closely your correct campaigns to restore the Early Apokoliptika by attempting to rid yourselves(and BRC in general) of dilettantes, poseurs, wreckers, takers and revaunchist counter revolutionaries in the most devious of disguises. These campaigns must not be in vain.True Apokoliptika must not be allowed to pass onto the hands of the less fervant and risk the terrible fate of straying into the murky waters of moderation and inevitable decline.

We strongly urge you to resist the urge to retreat and in no circumstances relinquish the reins of power.Declare a State of Emergency and assume All Powers.

You and Comrade Krash are virtually the last links to a glorious vision and a camp with immense talent. If it is just you two and most likely Fishy then so be it.Find the core that gets it and build from there. There is nothing wrong with a small camp with true believers. We held down a large space on Esplanade and 4:30 this year and thrived with a camp of 12.

As far as the Ancien Régime, let them take whatever.Their idea, which we feel is rather inspired, should not be of your concern.Do not lose time by being distracted by those with different agendas.Remain steadfast and laser like in your vision. In this manner we shall see a camp all will recognize as an asset to The Project. As always we stand shoulder to shoulder with you in furthering the cause of BRC revolutionary socialism. ................ Omar Suarez President a'Vie Club Neu
Be careful. You can spend all your money in there..............................Oriental Visitor

Two people camping with PWR is not 'Apok helping to launch PWR'. It's a purposely deceitful way of attempting to take credit for the ideas, vision, and work of others. The majority of campers with PWR have NEVER camped with Apok. I refuse to have our camp be a part of such a ridiculous lie. Again, leave us out of your drama stew.

Jellyfish, on the other hand, might appreciate having his work 'launched' by Apok. You'd have to ask him.

Two is still less than half, if you want to get technical, I think one person just wanted a change, so it was really only one person who left because they were unhappy about the leadership of Apok. But then we picked up more people from that camp every year, which might look like Raiders were built by a bunch of Ex-Apokilipticans to someone who wasn't there while a lot of this happened.

Some people tend to forget all the other people who have been a part of the Raiders who never camped in Terminal City before.

Hail the new Central Committee, each member clawing themselves to the top in a secretive transition rivaling China's. Who is Apok's Bo XiLai? Just as the great USSR has thrown off independent republic camps, and the great religions have branched and divided with charismatic leaders heading out on their own, so it is the same with camps. Just watch out for the criticisms of P-Riot on your flanks.

Perhaps there is a new role for the camp in the future, crime and punishment. The camp could set up an isolated gulag by the trash fence adjacent to the LEO fort in a shipping container. There miscreants subject to legal arrest for lesser crimes could be diverted by their own choice to the gulag where they could be disciplined by longingly viewing the Burningman event, deprived at a distance. (This by the way was the strategy for the great Alcatraz, the Tower of London and the tower of the Red Fort, with its view of the Taj Mahal) [just kidding...]

That's great news! I'm sorry to hear about the camp drama going on behind the scenes, and hope that things work out as amicably as possible. I look forward to seeing Apokiliptika as well as Sideshow on the playa in 2013, I think both themes are a lot of fun.

For what it's worth, I didn't read Sue's post as claiming credit for other peoples' work as much as saying that people who have left Apokiliptika have gone on to be involved in other awesome things.

I do too... I think that both, while somewhat differnt in theme and execution, would both add an amazing aspect to the playa. I've had a taste of what KK's planning before; I think pulling a full fledged camp concentrated and refined along is proposed theme would be absolutely mindblowing!!! And the rumors I have heard from those pulling off Apokliptika this year make me feel that it will blow the top (and minds) oflast year out of the water. Of this, I have no doubt!
