Theme Predictions for 2013

Cargo Cult - Who is John Frum? He is known to us by many names, this Visitor from Elsewhere, dispenser of endless abundance and wielder of mysterious technologies: John Frum, Quetzalcoatl, Osiris, "Bob." His cargo is splendid, his generosity boundless, his motives beyond our understanding. But across the ages and around the world, the stories all agree: one day he will return, bearing great gifts. Our theme this year asks three related questions; who is John Frum, where is he really from, and where, on spaceship Earth, are we all going?

Theme Predictions for 2013

Postby Simon of the Playa » Tue Sep 25, 2012 2:20 am

might as well get to it...

my prediction is:

Time Travel.

"Time travel is the concept of moving between different points in time in a manner analogous to moving between different points in space. Time travel could hypothetically involve moving backward in time to a moment earlier than the starting point, or forward to the future of that point without the need for the traveler to experience the intervening period (at least not at the normal rate). Any technological device – whether fictional or hypothetical – that would be used to achieve time travel is commonly known as a time machine."

Since the world is going to end in a couple months, I'd say the theme would be repopulate.

All camps will be sex camps.
Condems are banned.

TATTOO

I am the criminal whose chest is tattooed with a poinard above which are graven the words "mort aux bourgeois". Let us each tattoo this on our hearts.
I am the soldier with a red mark on my nakedness-when in a frenzy of love the mark expands to spell Mad Queen. Let us each tattoo our Mad Queen on our heart.
I am the prophet from the land of the Sun whose back is tattooed in the design of a rising sun. Let us each tattoo a rising sun on our heart.

Moving this over to the Theme discussion board. Once we set up the 2013 event boards (within the next few weeks) I'll move it again.

. . . Simon, I really like your idea of Time Travel as a theme. People already have a fondness for dressing in the clothes of different eras for theme parties . . . going into a certain camp and going back in time would be really fun. Or futuristic places. That would be the simplest interpretation. But it also could be really personal, with individuals having a day of being 17 again . . . or flash-forwarding to the 60, in the way one hopes to embody 60.

It would totally work with my current idea for my camp next year which would be a cross between A Sparkle Pony Safari and BRC Department of Fish and Game.

Lost and Found

In our lives, we transition through cycles of confusion and clarity. At times, we are sure of our path, certain of our identity and have a clear understanding of where we've been, how we arrived here, and where we intend to go. During other times, however, certainty eludes us. That which we attempt to find evades our best efforts, and that which we attempt to evade pursues us relentlessly. Can we emerge from these periods of confusion by force of will? Or do we return to familiar grounds only by giving up? By 'losing' our urge to control our circumstances, we might find that what we were looking for has been with us all along. Or, we might discover that what we held so dear has been lost forever, and we have no choice but to accept our new, and different, life.

In 2013, the Man stands atop a gigantic encasement containing a massive rotating hollow cylinder, oriented horizontally -- the Tumbler of Fate. Reminiscent of an industrial clothes dryer, it makes a full rotation once per minute and is powered by solar energy during daylight and by the sweat of 300 stationary bicycle riders by night. And for the first time, visiting the Man is mandatory. As soon as each citizen of Black Rock City arrives and sets up camp, they are then escorted to the Man by a new volunteer department: the Department of Uncertainty. The DU volunteers guide Black Rock City's citizens up the stairs to the top of the Tumbler of Fate, where they will be required to deposit their car keys into a funnel leading directly into the heart of the rotating cylinder. By late in the week, the jangle of tens of thousands of sets of car keys will have become as omnipresent as the city's usual churn of amplified electronic dance music. On the night of the burn, just prior to a festive display of pyrotechnics, the Tumbler of Fate will tilt forward at a slight angle and pour out the keys into a grand heap just to the side of the fire. At that time, citizens may attempt to complete the cycle of... Lost and Found.

Yeah... my first thought was to detonate it and have car keys raining down like shrapnel. But somehow the thought of an anticlimactic tilt, and everyone carefully picking through a big pile while a chaotic fire rages nearby tickled my sense of absurdity. Of course if they did rain down randomly, it could become some kind of required "getting to know you" exercise as you try to find the person who has your keys.
