Please Clean Up The Forum

Postby JohnyRadio » Mon Sep 03, 2012 12:43 pm

Hi

I noticed there's a huge amount of spamvertising on this forum. Cialis ads and tons of junk totally unrelated to Burning Man.

I'd like to suggest:

  • turn on the forum's built-in filters and blocks
  • add forum plugins to stop junk
  • enter keyword list, like "Cialis", "porn", "real estate", "free money", etc etc
  • assign certain forum members as "junior moderators" with power to delete junk posts
  • give each post "flag this post as spam" button, so all members can help.

Really guys, the amount of junk advertising on this forum is a little embarrassing-- I have not seen this level of junk on any forum in years. Please update your system! I'm happy to help if you're short-staffed.

Thanks
JohnyRadio

There is a place to flag any post as spam. It is a triangle with an exclamation point in it in the upper right of the post. You must be logged in to see it and use it.

This happens every year. the moderators are all at Burning Man, so nobody is minding the store. They'll get it cleaned up after they get back from TTITD.

Can't the forums be locked during the event? Seems like the only posters during that time are spammers anyway.

Really makes you have an appreciation for all the crap the moderators keep off the boards.

Thank you Mods .... We miss you when you're gone :)

I tried to fill in for the last week and deleted over 1000 spam posts but as you can see I did not even come close to getting them all. Flagging and more moderators will not solve the problem - modifications to the software are needed:

Add a human verification question of some sort to the login page
Reject posts from members younger than a certain age (a day? a week?) containing a link

These should be off the shelf mods.

What a mess. Trilo has the ability to delete specific spammers and all their posts. Dealing with this is nearly impossible without the ability to bulk delete spam.
Trilo should be back on line very soon, and all will be well the the world!
Meanwhile, every fiber of my body is in pain. I am getting too old for this shit!

While the spammers are still doing their bulk thing, feel free to bump your thread to the top and this will simply drop the spam for the time being. It will be another day before this is all back to it's happy, snarky, sarcastic, lovable forum that we all so enjoy. :D

Think of it as an electronic dust storm. During the couple weeks that most of us are out of the office with only limited ability to check in and take out the baddies, you get a glimpse of what we see every day of the year. We do have countermeasures in effect, but unfortunately there is a mongolian hoard of activity out there. You can either choose to wade through it, or wait until the weekend after labor day (when most of us are back and things are caught up).

I appreciate the mods as well. I hope to be at the burn next year but do hope while everyone is gone more mods are made and other suggestions listed in this thread are considered. Some of us left behind wanted to post but had a hard time digging through the mess.

I did a ton of mobile spam-zapping last night while my lovely gf drove us through the home stretch. It'll still be another day or two before I'm back or caught up, but things should soon be returning to what passes for normal around here. Cheers!

It is very ironic that this thread got spammed.

What's with these images of various very ordinary looking couples that spammers use?
