Yes DAB, you will get that fresh-in-the-morning playa smell, but you will NEVER get that stuff off your table. I have a garage full of playa crusted belongings that will never be clean enough to use any place else.

LOL, well I wasn't actually planning to put it on my table. I've noticed from the bikes that that stuff is hard to get rid of and they still have major grey sections after 2 pressure washings.

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience! When I saw the tag line I expected something tragic. Your experience is exactly what Burning Man is supposed to be.....a tranformational experience that weaves itself through the thread of your default life. Stop by the Lamplighter Lounge sometime and say hi.....better yet, come light lamps with us some evening. Then you'll really feel the love! :)

To me that is a much better summation than the usual "BM changed my life bit". Although my life has changed a lot since attending, basically only in ways that I wanted it to (at least subconsciously). It did serve to drive home how unhappy I was though.

When I was younger I was more of a free spirit and only got sucked into the trappings of modern, mature, conventional (add whatever other adjectives you wish here) society with a great deal of kicking and screaming. Eventually that becomes the norm though, and a the decades fly past you eventually get complacent with it and forget who you really are inside.

The burn reminded me of what has been missing in my life, and all that long supressed stuff resurfaced.

Yeah . . . uprooting oneself from life for a week, with little/no access to phones, internet, family, work, and default problems can remind you of who you are when those other things aren't twisting you into an unrecognizable shape.

Results vary, but it's always interesting.

Our neighbor at the burn summed things up pretty well too "The burn makes you realize how little you need to be truly happy".

Yes, Yes & Yes. You have described some of the experience to a 'T". My life was unwittingly and without planning or advanced knowledge 'destroyed by burning man' in 2000. I am forever grateful to the man who suggested we attend that first year. With Next To No advanced planning. (I wouldn't suggest that now. Read your First Timer's Guide & Survival Guide, People!) Now, 12 burns later (I skipped a year), I have experienced many cycles in my attendance. No longer am I focused on the one week period of the event. I practise throughout the year the many wonderful principles I was taught by many wonderful people out on the playa. It's no longer all about me and what i want. it's now what can i do for you...and you...and you.... Life is good. I also thank the playa and the project called burning man for 'destroying' my life as i knew it allll those years ago. :) See you soon, my burner family. ~Hugs~

Thanks CTJ for bumping this thread.

I really enjoyed reading this, DAB. It was just what I needed after some disillusionment I've recently had with some people I've met in the community. You've captured many feelings I had before/during/after my own first burn (2013, seems like so long ago!), and my heart is full of new excitement.

Even before I left BRC, I knew from that point forward, that there would always be two distinct chapters in my life.

Drawingablank, did you go this year?

If you did, how was it?

It was awesome to read about your first burn. You experienced something which I really hope to get out of my first burn in 2015.

Awesome.

Yes, this year was my fourth burn and in spite of busting my ankle up pretty badly within 6 hours of my arrival it was my best burn yet.

Being fairly immobile for the entire burn (I am still limping pretty badly), I didn't get out of camp much but that just provided me with more time to hang out with my camp mates which is my favorite thing to do at the burn anyway.

I did manage to hobble through a greeter shift and go out on the art cars a few times.

Just not having to think about the year's financial woes for 12 days was a blessing in itself.

I also added a new dimension to my burn this year with the branding iron and in my opinion at least, getting / giving brands together seems to form more of a bond than the typical encounter.

As for your first burn - You will get as much if not more from yours - just leave all expectations at home and say yes to everything because life begins at the end of your comfort zone.

I am thinking of writing on my own experience. But I am still processing, so all in due time. Thank you DAB for writing this. Its what brought me out of being just a lurker here on eplaya. Reading threads like this help me to understand whats going on with me during Decompression. I have friends that for them the process is over and others that say the process can go on year round.

The original post took me a long time to write - but it was well worth it by the time it was born. Being a writer, I find that writing and reworking a piece regularly helps me deal with decom, although it is not my normal writing style.

If that works for you great - use it, if not find a groove that fits you.

My son has been back in 2012, however his career has prevented his return since. He was hoping to attend this year, but he just started at a new company and couldn't swing the vacation time for that week.

My wife has not ruled out returning to BRC, but it's not really her cup of tea so I doubt it.
