Lol.. again.. thank you thank you thank you!!

I hope I can encourage anyone out there to GO BIG with your creations. Dream your dreams.. and then make it happen. I knew absolutely nothing about LEDs a year and a half ago. I knew what I wanted as my end result though, and I made it happen and learned from last years mistakes. I'm already planning next years suit with full RGB control and hopefully twice as many LEDs.. :D

I'll be wandering the playa every night.. and yeah, if you look.. you can see me on the horizon. Find me. I may have something for you..

If you get full RGB lights on this thing next year you are my fucking hero. I am just trying to imagine each of these panels with individual colour controls and it is making my brain explode with awesomeness. Congrats again.

P.S. for next year...... sound reactivity. Do it. The world needs this.

Junglesmacks, you will be a walking seizure waiting to happen.

A beautiful, beautiful seizure.

That's EXACTLY what the goal is. I'd like each tile to have it's own control in full RGB. Control all with some type of pre-sets.. along with some kind of dial in.. along with some kind of sound reactivity.. along with whatever your mind can dream up.

Very similar to what my good friend Jeremy did recently. Take a block of LEDs.. make it your giant pixel. Create with that.

I wanna wear it..

Ok ok.. in all geek-dom fairness, here are some specs on the final product.

Basically, I ended up using my custom 2x3" PCBs for both the top and bottom and having custom 1/16" white plexiglass panels CNC cut to sandwich over the top to help diffuse and protect the LEDs. I used 4mm nylon bolts to secure them all.

For the top, I used a Patagonia Capilene 2 pullover. I chose this because the material is sheer and thin yet super warm and stretchy. I wanted something that I could wear something else under if I needed to for warmth out there, yet would keep me warm by itself. The problem I ran into was that the PCBs are very sharp on the edges and I was worried about poking and ripping it. As a solution, I used black naugahyde flipped upside down and glued patches on that overhang about 1/4" on all sides. That was, as I moved the edges would run into the patches instead of the shirt. This also gave me a more secure base to attached the PCBs.

For the bottoms, it was pretty straight forward. I used the same fireman's pants as last year. The problem I ran into with these was that.. surprise! The metallic coating conducts electricity. I found this out when I bolted on some panels and test fired them.. shorted out the LEDs.. and fried them. Solution? Duct tape! I coated the back of each PCB with duct tape and trimmed to fit. Perfect insulating material.

I also built a small velcro'd pouch to house the PIC controller and mounted an on/off switch along with the variable pattern speed control dial on the front. Battery pouch on the other side.

Hey! Just 12 x AA batteries. I'm running lithiums this year which should give me 2900mAh per battery. I anticipate not having to change them out. I'm running 5.6A/channel, but not all at the same time since it's sequenced..

I wasn't going to do anything like this, but you inspired me...so I built some LED pants last night.

They analyze a few bands of the audio spectrum, which you can't really see in this video since I couldn't turn the stereo up late at night. Might do a shirt and hat later if I have any extra time.

VERY NICE!!!

Only thing I might suggest is watching the direction light on those things.. you may want to tone down the brightness a bit as to not totally blind people..

With my first suit last year, I used raw LEDs with no diffusion and my god.. that thing was BRIGHT. I had to make a little inline 500 ohm resistor pack just to tone it down. This year, I used 1/16" white plexiglass panels to diffuse things and make it a more glowing tile look rather than an LED flashlight look.

If you aren't using varying levels of PWM, you may want to just install a pot inline to give you adjustable brightness. I did this for Halloween here locally last year since it was a much more close quarters party downtown. It worked to a point, but since my sequencing has varying levels of brightness.. it was a little finicky...

Nice job though!

Directional light shouldn't be too much of a problem, they're SMD wide angle so the light isn't focused in any particular direction. Plus I only have 144 LEDs in there rather than 2240. Now, I did wear something similar to a Halloween deadmau5 concert and people were going "whoa that's BRIGHT", but I had them on my arms that time, right in people's faces.

I'd never use a potentiometer to dim LEDs. I have 48 channels with 12 bit PWM on all of them, so they can be dimmed if it comes to that. It should be OK...doesn't seem too bright, but I stare into a lot of bright LEDs on a regular basis.

Sadly I didn't see him and the suit of light out there anywhere. I kept looking for a bright beacon out on the playa but I did not spot him. :(
I did talk to others that had seen it and they all said it was amazing! I can't wait to see what next year brings.
