Actually, you can attach the vise grip pliers to a bumper jack and then pull the stubbornest stake of nearly any type. A 6' wrecking bar is another great tool to loosen the soil around the stake as well.
My favorite stakes are the the biggest nails that Home Depot sells, and you add a washer when you pound the stake in. Then, you call pull up your stakes with a large crowbar.
I'll give a mixed review to a pipe wrench. They tend to slip.
