I recently managed to stain a nit cotton sweater:

Image

I was on the verge of throwing it out before I remembered the wonderful advice that is the title of this thread! Who needs a sewing machine to make with the awesome?

Thanks, Ratty! And everyone else for your inspiration. More than any of the survival preparation, creating my own "costume" bits has made the idea of "I'm going to Burning Man!" real to me.

:D

PS - Please ignore the pasty white skin; I swear that a (protective) tan is on my "to do for Burning Man" list!

BSG, You did a great job. 'The Man' is perfect. Now you have inspired me too.

Hey, Keep your skin white. You are like a beautiful china doll. Wear sunscreen. Carry a spray bottle to reapply throughout the day. Wear lace gloves and a floppy hat to protect you. GET FRECKLES.

btw...You don't need no stinkin sewing machine. Cut holes, paint, attach hardware, fringe with scissors, tie on string or fabric or sew by hand.

BSG, your shirt reminds of this improvement I made a long time ago (I might have posted this earlier). I got this plain black dress from thrift store. It was boring.
I decided to take the plastic flower petals from one of those decorative flower vases and add it to the dress. I hand sew every one of it (might have gone a little overboard with the petals, but wth! :))
The big question is if I still fit in the dress.

One of the girls I know loaned me her sewing machine. I might try some ratty-inspired costume, if I find time.

If you sewed a dildo on the back, that would be a nice cock tail dress.

So, back when I'd just received the email (and concomitant bank card charge) showing I'd "won" the ticket lottery, I naturally danced in joyous circles for a few hours.

Then I hit up the nearest thrift store and overspent for a hideous white faux fur jacket. Because, to my overly-excited virgin mind, going to Burning Man meant I absolutely had to have a fur jacket... or something.

Thankfully for my wallet, I came to my senses soon afterwards, realizing that I certainly wasn't going to let others define my burnwear for me. Ever since then I've kept the purchases reasonable, and by "reasonable," I mean things without 1980s square shoulder pads.

The other night I started sorting through my pile of supplies for TTITD, removing plastic packaging and so on. At the very bottom of the pile, flattened and neglected and yet still with defiant shoulder pads apoofy, sat The Jacket of Shame:

Image

After trying it on and realizing that yes, The Jacket was still cringe-worthy, I thought to myself "What could possibly save this?" And then I did something so crazy, so totally unprecedented, it just might work: I stuck my leg through the sleeve.

Et voila! The sleeves fit my legs perfectly. A few quick snips with the fabric scissors and I had a lovely set of fake fur legwarmers, no sewing or elastic needed:

Image

My favorite part is that the foam shoulder pads make the tops stick up like knee armor:

Pale colors show dirt the least. I wear a lot of white, cream and tan out there for that reason, at least when I'm just bummin' around. It harmonizes. :D

Clearly I need to improve upon the barbarian-warrioress angle. Maybe some bone spikes... Either that or pitch it all in and wander around asking if anyone has seen the wicket.

Color is a point that's been confusing me - I've read that black shows the dust the most, so I've generally tried to avoid black and other dark colors. For some reason I picture the dusty as pale, off-white when it sticks to things, but it is more of a brown, huh?

Please do this.

You could make a little cat hat out of the remaining fur, and have a companion answer to "Wicket". (Maybe they could wear a little collar tag and run around making an arc from time to time?)

Your first instinct was actually correct. The dust drifts are fairly pale. If I wear a cream dress, no one can see if I've been sitting on the ground. Underfoot, the playa is a little more tan, or brown when wet.

DPW wears black on purpose. :D

Despite demi-goth tendencies, I don't usually wear black out there anymore, unless it's on my upper body, or something vinyl. Wipes clean.

I can't see any of your pics BSG :( it all sounds very nice though!!!

I didn't have an outfit for a party I went to last Saturday so I decided to make a new top. Again, I had everything at home already so I didn't have to spend a dime and most of the decorations are from my childhood button collection. I knew there was a reason I kept that big-bag-o-buttons for so long! I also used some tulle (I have ENDLESS amounts in every color, so if anyone has tulle ideas besides tutus, please let me know!!), the bow is from a box of chocolates and there's bit of broken necklace scattered about. For some reason it reminds me of sunken treasure :D

Thanks tahiti_treat! I'm having so much fun creating. Ratty (especially) and everyone else on this thread have been such a huge inspiration for me! I never used to make much of my own stuff, maybe I didn't have the confidence, but you really can make beautiful things for a fraction of what they'd cost in a store. I've been getting such great reactions to my tops in the community that I'm going to be hosting a bra-decorating workshop at my house soon. So there will be lots of blingin' boobies at my camp this year ;)
