The travelling WOD - Crossfit on playa?

Postby themightyaghabheegy » Sun Jun 17, 2012 9:00 am

i hope i'm posting in the proper section...

i'm trying to see if anyone would be interested in doing workout's of the day during the year's camp... we wouldn't really need equipment, there is a web site, http://www.thetravelingwod.com/... i'm thinking about organizing daily WODs from that site...

Would any one be down to WOD on playa??

Let me know!

Don't worry about the idea already having been done. It's never been done your way.

I think the issue is the use of the name CrossFit, which is a registered trademark of (and very tightly protected by) a running-shoe company. That issue was definitely the topic of much discussion in the other thread.

A challenging daily workout sounds like a great idea. As Fishy says, there's nothing wrong with doing something that's already been done. Otherwise, we'd have a playa with just one bar, one DJ, one bacon chef, etc. Have fun with it! Just don't use the name...

The Crossfit trademark is owned by Crossfit, Inc, not Reebok or any other running company. They're fairly protective but there's no way they'd have any issue with a Crossfit-themed camp that didn't try to make any $$ off participants.

Not exactly the first brand being used on the playa either. Barbie Death Camp, for instance.

BDC comes in under the right to comment on and satirize the product.
Using a brand name as a camp name just straight up comes close to the commercialization on the playa, a different animal.

I don't think that CrossFit Inc leans very heavily against people who want to share their principles in imaginative ways. Go for it.

I'm not talking about whether CrossFit has a problem or not. I'm just concerned with no commerce.

Seems like it'd be fine, so long as the camp wasn't using the brand name to promote the company (ie called Crossfit camp or putting up crossfit signs, etc).

Of course, he's not selling anything, but I can see that you're concerned about a brand name.
But then in that case, we need to put duct tape on our beer cans. :)
"Crossfit" represents an exercise philosophy as much as (or more than) a commercial brand name.

I'd have problems with a Papst Blue Ribbon camp, unless it entailed some sort of bizarre livestock judging. I don't need people to cover up their beer cans. I prefer (strongly) people to cover up the pertinent parts of the sides of their rvs and box trucks.

You can have a "beer" camp, and I suppose you could re-name a crossfit inspired camp. I sure did.

We at The Traveling WOD think it is a GREAT IDEA!

If you want we will program a couple of WODs for you or program for the whole week if you want.

We will certainly post during the week that we have folks getting it done at the Burning Man!

"Traveling" makes me think that you have an MV adapted from an Ice Cream truck, but instead of treats, you deliver a motivational fitness instructor!
