I simply see them as having the best access to ghost-writing services. IF you're paying $20,000 to be pampered, are you really going to balk at a few hundred more for an essay?

Hey Fishy, I agree - what I was trying to get at was that I thought that BeachBum was identifying a big piece of the problem - not necessarily the solution. I agree that apps are not the answer, both for practical and philosophical reasons.

I can imagine apps that say things like "Survival Plan: putt the lime in the coconut LOL WAT" when they really mean that they are going to build a two story juice bar with flame effects.

Or people who plan on bringing a jar of pretzels and 4 gallons of water and spend the whole time helping build stuff and figuring out how they will get it together next time.

Or even people who don't quite get it right - get a bunch of help from their camp, spend the the bulk of the week wandering around in a daze mostly gawking at the city and the art wondering what they are doing there in the first place, and then later say - oh shit - I need to go back and get more involved. (raises hand)

The issue seems to be that you can pay $20,000 to be pampered. But what to do about that? The financials are not public, and neither is the invitation to the camp in many cases. Is there any way to approach this without destroying the spontaneity of it all? Is the playa not big enough to accommodate us all? Can everything coexist? My heart asks that last question, my brain says that heart is an absolute idiot and that is exactly how to get scammed.

I dunno. I have been thinking a lot about this over the week.

I believe that education and information is the key. We need to send out a preemptive network of informational internet sorties to all the various companies and corporations a few month prior to Burning Man telling them to please not commodify our little festival and that plug & play is not cool. Once we feel that the international corporate community has been duly informed, we can then set up disruption squads festooned in black shoulder pads/helmets on bicycles with bullhorns and turn them loose on any transgressors if they try to pull this stunt on the playa again.

See, this part, I disagree with. Why give them ideas? Advertisers are like trolls; they don't discriminate between positive and negative attention, and if they detect a sensitive spot, they'll go after it with gusto.

See, this part I like. I'm not into the uniform, riot-squad/goon-squad look, but I think a disruption squad of manic bunnies, bearded faerie princesses, post-apocalyptic Bedouins, AARP naturalists, leather Mamas, shirtcockers, and problem clowns* could be pretty effective. It shouldn't be too hard for people to get the word out when something like the dinner-party fiasco is unfolding and have just such a mob descend upon the revellers, turning it into a kind of mad-hatter's tea party. We'll get the satisfaction of fucking their day, and they'll get a more authentic BM experience. Win-win!

*Among countless other possibilities, of course.

I had almost forgot about doing this:

Krug.jpg

Laser transparency + make an image (print in reverse) + paint (paint over toner in reverse on back of acetate) + janky spigot + upcycled Coroplast roadside spam + adhesive spray (stick acetate to Coroplast) + mount spigot to sign = Krug Self-Service Refill Center.

Install abutted to porta potty.
