PROJECTORS- Will our Projector work through Plexiglass?

Postby alexamonkey » Thu May 10, 2012 4:06 pm

I am building a protective box for our projector. Anyone know if projecting through a piece of plexiglass will interfere with the picture?

It shouldn't if it isn't at all warped. If so it will then act as a lens.

It may make it slightly dimmer, since plexiglass uses a polymer that absorbs lumens*.

Presuming you intend to do this to protect it from playa dust. Here's the catch.....You'll need ventilation for cooling.
If not the projector will overheat, and shut down.
Integrated fan, vents, and air filter might do the trick. But maintaining the correct airflow can prove to be a significant challenge.

Any you'll have to clean off the dust fairly regularly...

theyve only been projecting through stuff for about 100 years now..

in order to keep the film viewing area in a theatre quiet theres usually a window (glass) that is projected through, keeping the projection room noise away from the patrons.

i dont see why plexi would be markedly different from regular flat glass.

if the projection lens sticks out far enough.. it may be possible to cut a hole in the plexi and use a glass UV/Protection filter on the projection lens.. but i doubt thatd be needed.

Did you try it at home using baby powder or something to simulate playa dust on the plexiglass?
