Ignore Forum Feature

Postby lemur » Mon Apr 23, 2012 1:01 pm

I would like to see a feature I have used on other online forums.. dont know if its available for us here.

I mainly 'browse' ePlaya, and other forums, using the UNREAD POSTS link,..simply choosing to avoid areas I do not want to see doesnt really suit the way of using the site i choose.

The only way, right now, to avoid seeing posts in the UNREAD POSTS part of the site is to go to each individual forum and go to 'mark all as read' ...but this isnt ideal, as any new posts still show up.

I would like to see the addition of a feature that would allow me to ignore the updates from certain forums on my UNREAD POSTS link.

For example, two forums I might add to my IGNORE list would be INTRODUCE YOURSELF! and TICKETS WANTED.

of course, manually navigating to these forums would show me the content, as they wouldnt be explicitly ignored from my view, just stopped from showing up as an updated post in the UNREAD POSTS thing.

please o please.

:D

That's an excellent idea. There doesn't appear to be an easy way to enable that within the board's software, but there may be a module or two out there that we can use. I'll add it to the list.

WHAT! Ignore the introduce yourself forum! How could you. Welcoming the new eplayans is one of the most important responsibilities that the old timers here have. Shame on you.

Though I agree it's a good feature. I think the introduce yourself forum should be like announcements where you are not able to add it to your ignore list.

Sorry for the confusion, I wasn't saying that ignoring the Introduce Yourself forum was an excellent idea, I was talking about the feature request in general. I think there's value in letting ePlaya users choose what they are or are not interested in seeing in their new topics list.

It's probably also worth noting that you could also achieve similar results today with a newsreader app. Subscribe to the feeds of the boards that you are interested in, and you're good to go.

I think a more apt question is whether or not regurgitating the same, exact 5 letter phrase ad naseum to every single new poster in lieu of even a shred of personalized contact is actually greeting or just symptomatic of a serious case of OCD.

I personally love it that jkisha's pound it welcome is usually one of the first welcomers to the group. Kinda gives a hint as to what's in store.

I like Lemur's idea of being able to set ignore on certain threads. Hopefully Trilo can find a snap on tool that works.

I love it all too, don't get me wrong. It's a question that has been silently plaguing me for years now though.

I like to think of it as possibly eplaya's greatest ongoing performance art.

Often, in days gone by, it was the only five words many that posted in that forum ever got. I don't usually bother to comment on questions asked in that forum, as it's the introduce yourself forum, not the ask questions or make requests forum. Plus, there are always people that are compelled to answer every thread someone posts, so those questions never go unanswered. And, who do you think of when you read those five words?

Good night, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are.

Don't know how many, but I will agree with JS about having OCD when it comes to checking the introduce yourself forum. New posts there are the first thing I check for. You're a good greeter too Fishy as is Savannah to name only a few. I think it's important to give everyone a warm welcome before we snark the crap out of 'em.

That's a great idea! I'd also love to have a plonk-forum feature as well, and for exactly those two forums mentioned in the OP.

The beg-a-thon ticket forum is just a blackhole forum anyway, and I'm not at all interested in seeing the introductions or--even worse--the "Hi there! Welcome to ePlaya!" boilerplate salutations they spawn in response.
