That's the idea, for people with utility trailers to be able to put up a quick sleeping shelter.

A tarp and some bungee cords and you're good to go. 8)

Would love to make one of these. I check this thread every couple of days, just to lurk. Cannot wait to see the finished product.

Hard to see in the pic, but there are five 3/8" lag bolts through the upper rail and into a 2"x4"x10' that sandwich the top of the plywood.

Image

This gives me a solid hanger for the cross bracing for the roof.

Image

Image

His trailer is 10' long, so we had to splice on an extra 2'.

By putting a 2"x4" over the splice on the inside, it was then easy to run lags with washers from the outside to make it solid.

Image

Image

So far it looks like this.

Image

Next will be the door panel and a place to duct the cooler in. 8)

He will be towing this with a Ford Focus, so the interior is only 4' tall, to keep some of the wind resistance down.

Total interior space will be 4'x5'x10', and it will have a small window at the front to vent the cooler!

@Figjam -

Awesome innovative design! It looks like a bomber way to ride out the dust-storms too!

As far a MPG- perhaps a "V" of plywood over the tongue would help out. I'd think splitting the air would be easier than bashing through it...

Thanks for the amazing detail here- on my way outside to look at my 14' utility trailer... or should I say "PlayaPod"!

If it has the short side rails, you might consider the covered wagon or monkeypod aproach.

That way the wind isn't an issue, and it will be easy to set up onsight. 8)

The pods are great when traveling cause when I need a nap, I can just pull over and climb inside to sleep.

If I arrive on playa and the weather is bad, samey same.

Burgins are easy to keep motavated as long as you have the whip.

I believe the little rascal hid it when I was'nt looking!

He got all the holes drilled in the frame to anchor the ply to the pod.

We used 15/32" ply to keep it light cause the frame will help keep things from warping.

Image

This is the panel for the door.

Image

Framed for the panel.

Image

Cut the panel where the door will hinge.

Image

Frame the inside of the door with 2"x4"s.

Install the piano hinge.

Image

Leave enough overlap on the roof to keep rain out.

Image

A big plus was the way the tailgate is mounted to act as a step, bench, and security that is a tribute to Yggies doors. 8)

Image

Image

All it needs now is the lockset and the front window to finish it up. 8)

Next is the nifty shade designed for this, which is already done! 8)

Here's a rough idea of how the shade for this pod sets up.

Theres a pipe tacked on at each corner.

Image

Slide a 1"x8' stick of EMT through each of those pipes clear to the ground.

Image

A 10' stick of 1" with a stick of 3/4" inside makes the top rail.

Image

Image

The 3/4" slides out an extra 8'.

Image

Image

Now an 18'x30' heavy duty silver tarp will go over this structure from one side to the other.

We don't have the tarp yet, but let me explain.

12 and 1/2' from the side of the trailer, the 18' edge of the tarp will be staked to the ground with 24" rebar.

The tarp then goes across the trailer from one side to the other.

On that side, 14' from the trailer, rebar stakes with ratchet straps to tension the tarp tight.

The rope in these pictures represent where the 30' edge of the tarp will be.

Image

Image

Image

Rope will be streched at the front and back to cabiner that edge of the tarp to.

Now the wind can flow over, or through this shade.

If he parks facing north, the pod will be in shade all day.

You could get as long a tarp as you want for more shade, but this gets you about 18'x25' shade footprint!!! 8)

Just getting back to this topic. My trailer looks very similar to Figjam's. However, I had some problems. It was a rather difficult tow from San Diego. My Toyota 4Runner and its 3.5L V6 struggled up every hill. Image
