I can think of a few excuses.
1) Latex allergies.: Yes there are non-latex condoms, but around here they cost about $9 for 3 condoms. That's expensive.
2) Abusive relationship: My ex-husband (gem that he was) refused to use condoms with me regardless of whether or not I wanted to get pregnant. He said he shouldn't have to use condoms with his wife.
3) Faith in primary birth control This has gotten many women (myself included, have you met JekJek?).

1 $3 is less expensive then a Corona at Joe's in Gerlach. You're absolutely right. However, the non-latex condoms also have a higher failure rate than the latex ones do. So sometimes, although they're being used, they end up being fairly worthless.

2 Looking back where there sign's you missed? My entire life I have seen girls/boys fall into these relationships and wondered, why? My ex-husband was charming and lovely to me until the day he married me. At that point I became property to use and abuse. And he did. It was a very scary, difficult time in my life.

3 Faith in primary control is a very valid issue.

JekJek, name rings a bell but no, not right off hand.
JekJek is my oldest daughter. Beautiful, amazing person. I brought her out in '09, '10' and '11. She comes to eplaya once in a while... I was on the Pill when I got pregnant with her. Neither my doctor nor my pharmacist warned me that the antibiotics I was taking would cancel the effectiveness of my birth control.

It's easy to lay blame when you don't know a situation is the point I was trying to make. Women accidentally get pregnant for many reasons. Irresponsibility is but one.

Reminds me.... My girlfriend (many years ago).... When I met Patty, she had tiny little twin daughters. Their father had moved out of state the instant he learned she was pregnant, not to be ever heard from again. And Patty is most definitely not flighty or irresponsible. Makes me ashamed to be male.

Oooooh, now that US gov't payments have gone paperless, they can withhold 100% for unpaid child support. So crossing states lines will not shield a deadbeat dad at all; if the mother signs up for foodstamps or medicaid, he is going to pay for it eventually.

If we're not careful, this discussion could progress to... how the best qualified are removing themselves from the gene pool, and how the least qualified are breeding the most. That could get ugly. But fact is, we've eliminated natural selection from the process, what with modern medicine and hygiene, and no saber tooth tigers to eat the slow kids. Better we not go there!

You telling me? I once transported a pregnant 23 yr old female from hospital a in Detroit to hospital b. It was her 11th pregnancy. She had 7 children living at home. And Medicaid was picking up the tab. That was probably 15-16 years ago. I wonder how many of those 7 (or 8 if the 11th made it) became productive members of society. I wonder how many, if any, had the same father. She flat out told me she would get pregnant to have a child so she could have a "raise" in hew welfare benefits. I'm sorry, but a society that rewards this kind of behavior financially is truly broken. Instead she should have been offered a tubal ligation if she wished to remain on the "dole". And not after 7 kids. Detroit is a cesspool. Children killing children. Children killing parents. 3 Teens charged in shootings. A 9 month old boy was killed recently as well, retaliation over girls fighting at a club. A 12 year old girl killed shortly before that, a over an alleged cellphone theft. A FUCKING CELLPHONE!?! And yet they keep rewarding these baby factories all the while letting the "fathers" (aka worthless pieces of shit) off the hook.

Sorry. Rant off.

Me thinks you were right Elliot.

Well, you can also look at how many of the "best qualified" would look at many members of this board as the "least qualified"- lacking Ivy League degrees, family wealth, the correct ancestries, high-paying jobs...

I mean, I'm the illegitimate child of a woman who was cheating on her husband and went to Florida for "rheumatism" therapy or something, and went home "cured" (and minus a child). I am lucky in that I am "white" and was adopted quickly (5 days old) by a solid middle class family that was full of love. I don't think the circumstances of my birth make me less "qualified" than a Rockefeller, they just mean I wasn't born with the instant access to success if I chose to pursue it; I was lucky enough to grow up with the family support needed to have a (mostly) stable and happy life.

It's not the birth that's the issue, it's how a child is raised. There are plenty of children born into wealth who are huge wastes of space paris hilton because they were given things, not love; there are also children born into extreme poverty who grow up to be amazing people (like my mother-in-law), because even though they lacked things, they didn't lack love.

I agree a Million Percent. I also believe you were one of the few to be rescued from an unfavorable upbringing. (...for which I'm very glad.)

When I said "gene pool" I made a mistake. I should have said something about family environment, as you explain. Thanks, Eric, for catching that.

I once had neighbors whose circa eight year old son could speak only in phrases from television. If he couldn't say what he wanted to say with an advertising slogan, it didn't get said. And sometimes he spoke television slogans outside any context at all, just out of the blue. Other than that, he seemed perfectly normal -- I don't think he was retarded. Just a case of TV as nanny.

(Hmmm.... I guess I was guilty of using a common phrase, rather than thinking for myself! I knew I shouldn't have gotten out of bed today. )

I too was lucky enough to be adopted by a wonderful, loving family within the first week of my life. My parents are still loving, supportive, amazing people (hell, they funded my trip to the Burn in '09, because they understand how important it is to me), and I am grateful to have been raised by them. Even when I was an awful teenager, there was not a day in my life growing up that I did not hear that I was loved.

I considered giving up my daughters when I was pregnant with both of them, and there were times in their lives when I wondered if I had made the right decision to keep them. Particularly when they were young (after I'd left my ex-husband) and we were living on nothing (because my 25 hour per week minimum wage job meant I made too much money for government assistance). I figured that even if all I had for them to eat was mac and cheese, tuna fish, and red delicious apples, if I made sure, every single day, that they knew how much I loved them and what amazing people they are, that they might not feel like they missed out on too much. Even so, when I lost my job and my home, I gave the girls to their fathers rather than putting them through being homeless with me. And when I got to spend time with my girls, I made sure that they knew how much I loved them, and that we'd be together again as soon as I could make that happen. They only lived away from me full-time for about two years, and it was the right thing to do but it was hard.

The result of this is that my daughters are two smart, amazing, compassionate, funny women. Someday, if they choose to have children, I know that they will raise their children in a loving, supportive environment because they were raised in one.

And again, I wonder if adoptees are attracted to the burn. That's two more on my list. I grew up with my bio-parents, and it turned out okay in the long run, but Scott was adopted, and he was one of those who maybe always felt lost. Of course, he was in foster care until he was a year and a half...

It took me a long time, past his death by months or years to see just how big that wound was in him.

I'm glad all of you took to it so much better.

On an over populated earth, I think abortion and birth control should be cheap and easy and without guilt tripping. Once they are born, give them the best damn care possible (sorry, Red, I couldn't do "anywhere") so they can grow up healthy human people, body and mind and heart.

I was extremely lucky in the fact than when my brother & I were adopted (both in the early 60's), it wasn't talked about, but we were raised knowing we were adopted.

Back then parents didn't normally tell their kids that they were adopted, and you get all those stories of people in their teens discovering it & deciding their lives were a "lie". Dave & I were raised knowing we were adopted, and knowing that our parents chose to have us in their lives. It wasn't a dark secret, it was "we love you so much we brought you into our lives".

Some interesting histories!
I was born into a very proper upper-middle-class family -- mom, dad, two kids and 1.3 dog. So proper were we, that my folks would not divorce even though they ought to have, and knew it. Decent people simply did not do such scandalous things as divorce. That was for low-lives, like people who wore turtleneck pullovers. Well, that was my dad, Chief of Family Protocol.

Every year, my brother and I were supposed to earn a certain physical fitness medal. This was very important. All good boys of nice families earned that medal. So important, that when I turned out to have a "throwing arm like a girl", Dad cheated to get me the medal.
My brother and I have been paralyzed with "social status performance anxiety" ever since.

All right, sorry I brought it up. Much more fun over on the Exploding Bicycle thread. But wow, what sweet stories some of you have of loving families! :D

I was adopted in '75 and I have always known. Mom and Dad presented it as a fact, like my curly hair or hazel eyes. Being adopted was part of who I was, part of what made me unique and special. When a boy in the sixth grade made a comment along the lines of "At least my parents wanted me," as my parents dried my tears, they told me that being adopted meant that I was more loved than most children, because my biological parents loved me enough to recognize that they couldn't take care of me, and my real parents loved me so much that they chose me.

I am a lucky girl.

My in-laws were both adopted and they are the sweetest people I know... they are generous and certainly pass on lot of kindness in the world.

I have been thinking about adoption myself, that I would like to adopt a baby.

I gather there is an even greater need for Foster Parents, often for children who have already suffered a few years of neglect and need some seriously dedicated "remedial upbringing".

I was adopted at birth and was told when I was about 6. There was no love in my adopted home, and with the feeling of rejection by my bio parents, I grew up always being the odd one, the outsider. Few friends, pretty much a loner. Kind of explains why i grew up doing things I could do solo, like backpacking, or sailing, scuba etc.

Then around my mid 40's, I was found by my bio Mom and learned why i was always the redneck of the family, why I preferred the 2 tracks to the highways, campfires to tv. She's a farm girl, not like the upper middle class family I grew up in. I am so comfortable with her, being with her. Her husband, who passed away in the fire that just burned down her home, welcomed me into the family with open arms and a firm handshake. In a way, I am glad she found me so that I could be with her during these tough times she is going through.

And boy oh boy, do I want to move back up north even more then I ever did, if that is possible. But I will be going back up north Friday for the weekend, help her shop for new guns to replace what she lost.
We will be out in that deer blind come fall, I told her that.
