More Newb Questions

Postby Brianna_Beauty413 » Thu Jan 19, 2012 8:56 pm

So as I've been wandering the ePlaya, I've come up with even more questions...

1. What is a sparkle pony? Just someone who loves to dress up in sparkly/girly/foofy things for BM?

2. I've heard of people talking about their 'name' on the playa...Do people have nicknames out there? Is it bad juju to use your real name or something?

Has nothing to do with anything important really...just wondering :D 8)

love,
Bri<3

Two thirds of the Burn attendees like to dress in sparkly/girly/foofy things. That alone is not enough. :)

SPARKLE PONY, –NOUN, One of the Burner Principles is Radical Self-Reliance. Everyone at a Burn event is expected to bring everything they need to survive for the duration of the event — food, clothes, water and shelter. Yet this principle overlaps with another — the gift economy, where Burners share what they have with those that need. Of course there are those who take advantage of this by coming to the event poorly prepared.

A sparkle pony is a Burner who is under-prepared for basic survival but still managed to pack 2 suitcases full of fabulous outfits. He or she expects the community to take up the slack because they’re just so wonderful and drama inevitably follows when expectations are not met.

Although the word dates back to at least 2008, it was popularized by the SPARKLE PONY CORRAL, a theme camp present in Black Rock City from 2009-2010. Frustrated participants could drop off their camp’s sparkle ponies at the corral where they would be fed, watered, and have their egos stroked by “certifiable experts.” Sparkle ponies received much-needed attention while campmates received a much-needed break.

Secondly: it is not bad juju to use your real name on the playa. Lots of people don't have a playa name. But you may choose one if you don't want to use your own (for whatever reason), and it is considered almost universally good fortune if someone names you . . . although you don't have to accept.

HAHAHAHAHA Reading about the SPARKLE PONY CORRAL cracks me up. I wonder what someone had to do in order to become a “certifiable expert”.

Okay, here's what I suggest. After you come through gate, greeters give you three sticky sparkle stars. When you see somebody acting like a sparkle pony you get to stick a star on. Since it's a sparkle pony, it's probably on bare skin. When there's three stuck on, the sparkle pony police, a subset of the Rangers, have to take 'em to the sparkle pony camp. There, the sparkle pony experts, who used to work for Michele Bachmann's husband talking gays out of being gay, will try to do that for the sparkle ponies. Doesn't work for the gay, probably won't work for sparkle ponies. But at least they're getting attention.

And off the streets...
