Campers nowadays are soft. Grab a compass and a timex... do math and figure out your location by aligning the stars and the moon. When you get close enough.. follow your nose to home base. Or just ask someone who doesn't look wasted.
Can you at least admit that nuclear explosions are awesome!?

I had a hiking GPS and never used it. There was one occasion were it would have been EXTREMELY useful but I just never remembered I had it with me.

Edit to add: if and when I did get confused I generally could always find the orange covered poles by the side of the roads.

I hope to get an early arrival pass so I can steal some signs before the event begins.

Flags on one kind or another work. After getting lost one year an inspired burner came back and made a five story inflated crayon you could see from across the playa.

if yer out on the playa it should be easy enough to find yer way around even without the man.

the lamplighters slogan is 'illumination, navigation, celebration' ..and.. the spires can help you navigate

if yer out in the middle ..

Image

the spires leading from center camp to the man have 4 lanterns each, these are 'greater spires'

the spires on the other 3 promenades have 2 each.. 'lesser spires'..

(theres also lanterns in each 'keyhole' ...if i was lost id head toward esplanade to orient myself)

...center camp cafe is a good visual aid that doesnt go away!

My perspective... I was kinda annoyed at first when the street signs went missing, esp when the big landmarks started coming down.

However, as a relatively shy person, this put me in a position where I had to stop and interact with other burners regularly to figure out where the hell I was. This was a positive experience and if looked at in that light instead of 'assholes stole the signs!', it became much less frustrating.

It's not like you're commuting to work in the morning or something; who cares if it takes some extra time to find your way? You might find something fun by accident along the way.

A little girl rabbit got lost in the woods.. She came to a clearing where a young buck rabbit was sitting.. She said.. please tell me how to get out of these woods..
The young buck rabbit said.. Give me a little and I will tell you.. She did and he gave her directions.. She followed the directions and that lead her right back to the clearing where the young buck was sitting.. THe little girl rabbit said.. Oh please tell me how to get home.. Again the buck rabbit said.. Give me a litle and I will tell.. She did and he told her the directions.. But they lead her right back to the same clearing.. Do you want to know how the little girl rabbit got home :?: :) :)

Seems pathetic to need to take a sign to remember you were there.

And counter to the ephemeral nature of the city.

A number of my street sign suggestions seem to have been picked up.

Signs were being stolen long before the weekend.

They are attached better now and often snap or totally destruct when stolen now.

It was worse in the past.

I like Unjon's idea.

We all have a chip implant.

Go into any large building.. Walk up to the direction board.. It will know where you are.. A little sign will read....YOU ARE HERE.. happens every time.. Big brother is watching..

this is what it says in 2011s THE WAY IT IS document..

Greater Spire - A DPW-built, lamplighter-hung lamppost with four lanterns. Greater spires are the only type lining the main processional between Center Camp and the Man. Knowing this is an excellent navigational device in whiteout conditions or when intoxicated, and especially after the Man is burnt.

Lesser Spire - A DPW-built, lamplighter-hung lamppost with two lanterns. This is the most common style of lamppost in BRC.

Lamplighter - One of the hundreds of volunteers who clean, fill, light, and hang over 700 kerosene lanterns during their nightly procession along the major streets of Black Rock City.

Lucifer - The "bringer of light". The Lamplighter's truck, affectionately referred to as "Luci."

Luminary - A Lamplighter who leads a lighting route.

the more you know!!!
