HELP! Anyone Have Experience Fighting a Traffic Ticket!?

Postby Mikey Lion » Thu Oct 27, 2011 12:06 pm

Hi Everyone,

Burning Man was the fuckin' sheeeiitt!!! HOWEVER, unfortunately on Friday I had to take my girlfriend to the airport in Reno because she couldn't get out of work, and I received a traffic ticket while driving on the 447... :( I'm a resident of California and my insurance is already sky high and I can't afford for it to go up anymore. Does anyone have any experience fighting a traffic ticket in the Washoe County area??? I can't seem to find any traffic lawyers on google in that county and I'm starting to get worried.

If anyone knows any lawyers out there, please give me a holler!

A lawyer will most likely cost you more than the ticket. If it's in another state than your DL, there's a chance your insurance won't find out about it and I know this for fact. Look into being able to take online courses which take away the points. Show up for court and hope that the cop doesn't or at least talk to the prosecutor and see if you can get it reduced.

That's all about the best you're gonna get..

In California, if you get a traffic ticket you have the option to pay the ticket and go to Traffic School (on line counts) and upon successful completion of the course the ticket is not shownon your DMV record at all, so it doesn't affect your insurance.

I was cussing the whole time, but actually I'm really glad I took the online course. I actually learned some things I didn't know and was reminded of some things I had long forgotten. I think I'm a better driver today because I took the course. Though it was an expensive lesson.

Some places have the option of contesting the ticket by mail.
I don't know about nevada.
Often they fail to respond timely.

There are some books and webhouses about this sort of thing.

I'm guessing that at this point, nearly 2 months after the fact, the window for paying a fine and taking a course has probably closed. I'm also going to guess that out of state speeders (ie burners) on 447 during the week of Burning Man aren't going to get much sympathy from the courts unless they have a really strong case. Good luck!

Of course he is. Just trying to clear his good name.

And his rates are only sky high because the man is out to get him.

I'm just going to guess that your court date has come and gone and you probably have a warrant if you haven't already paid it.
If your court date hasn't happened yet and you live close enough, show up to your court appearance (Washoe County Courthouse is in Reno). Generally if you show up, explain your situation, they knock off the moving violation part and lower the ticket. This has worked for me in the past.

I have until tomorrow to pay my fine... it's looking like I'm going to have to suck it up and pay it today. Yes I was speeding going 35 in a 25. Luckily my ticket is only for $102. I just hope it doesn't get back to my insurance and raise my rate sky high. :(

The reason I was wondering about a traffic lawyer in Washoe County is because here in San Diego we have an awesome lawyer who runs a practice called Mr. Ticket. He only charges $100 and wins about 80% of the cases. Has worked every time for me :)

yeah!~!!

slow down! and fuck yer insurance rates.. if you cant do the time dont do the crime.

surely people like you clog up the justice system, Right? Instead of paying the ticket that you know you deserve... wanting to fight it? to save $2 and maybe some insurance payments?

you did it, and your only worry is hiked up insurance premiums? what about the safety of all the people you may have endangered with your recklessly dangerous fast driving?! nevermind that.. it's all bout insurance rates skyrocketing... which you somehow feel entitled to avoid.. even though you admit to doing the shit that hikes them up..

sheesh !!

you may be innocent until proven otherwise on some legal matters.. but you arent innocent of being foolish..

nuthin better than someone who knowingly and intentionally breaks a (mostly) reasonable traffic/safety law, cries about getting caught, cries about any repercussions, and asks how to slink out of it, probably on some technicality..........

Mike, LoR is correct, and I HOPE you at least called and asked for traffic school; maybe you don't qualify? yikes.
(btw, the punishment should fit the crime, insur. co's just want profit, assholes  )

I'm bored so I'll post two Nevada ticket stories I lived through (and maybe lighten up the other heavy crap on the board)

A few years ago, I got a ticket in Reno, Washoe County, for making a right at a red light, wtf? The cop pointed at that sign off I80 & West McCarrann (the one that is difficult to see and it was a newly contructed off ramp) anyway, the cop said "Yeah, it's rare you CANNOT make a right on red, but it's there, see it" as he's pointing to the tiny obscure sign. "Ask for online class bla bla, here's your ticket"
So, When I went to court in D.T. Reno Courthouse, the judge was presented on a TV screen! (then he appeared but was rushed, big time) The court basically gave 3 choices, all of them sucked, pick door # 1, 2 or 3...3 you could win big, or lose HUGE! IDK, to me they made it too scary to even THINK about talking to the judge!
I asked the bailiff (sp) and he said just pick door # 2 or whatever it was offering traffic school. So, I just went for the traffic school...but felt railroaded.
(btw, during the traffic stop the cop became rude and agressive bc I did not find my lic, insur and reg fast enough for him, again wtf? That is now ready when I go to Reno with out of state lic plates--IMO, Reno has predatory cops, they HATE California plates, sorry, but it's true in my experience and I don't drive a beater or hippie looking truck, lol)

29 years ago, I got a ticket for running a red light downtown, there are soooo many lights downtown, I didn't see that particular traffic light..LOL...(my town has ONE light total) and no casino lighting! Same courthouse, I bring my puppy and tie her up on a horse post outside (yes I know, cruel, I'm a mountain person it's NOT cruel, she had a water bowl it was mild weather, get over it) I run in to tell the gals my puppy is tied up, and I wanna pay and/or get traffic school...the gals tell me "Oh bring her in, we'll take care of her!" I am like huh? wtf? oookkkaayyy....so I bring the puppy in to the lobby and 5, then 10+ gals and men are petting my puppy and flirting with eachother...meanhwile I am thinking "Does the judge inside the courtroom have pigs, horses, cows, and other livestock in his courtroom? Maybe he has a live chicken perched on his head!! Where am I? Hill fucking billyland? :? ...(I'm orig from NYC & L.A. soooo, ya can't blame me for wondering!!) Anyway, turns out the gals and a guy (I think an assistant D.A? flirting heavily with the gals) they had the ticket excused BEFORE I ever got to see the courtroom...how niiiiiiice...to this day, I STILL wonder, what was in that courtroom! DID the judge really have a chicken perched on top of his head? :? :!:

These are TRUE stories, I mean who could make this shit up?! (and I miss the older, smaller Reno  )
I'm the MAN in a truck, burner who is stuck, you're in luck! I'll whip out my BIG tow chain and not charge you, not even one lousy buck!

I wish my street had some cops preventing people from bombing down the street a greater-than-residential speeds. Lost a cat from some driver, and saw a cat get hit too :(

So many things to do! I'll have to put those on my list of things to do like setting up a clothesline for those annoying kids on their motorized scooters, and anti-tank mines for ice cream trucks whenever they ride on by playing the theme from "The Sting."

We are warned in the Survival Guide and on countless posts in the forum not to speed through the towns on 447. 25 means 25 (or 23 if you're paranoid like me). If you did not read the SG or failed to do your due diligence prior to heading out to the desert and got popped, it's your own damn fault and pay your stupidity tax. If you DID read the SG and the forums and were therefore thoroughly knowledgable about the laws and lack of tolerance to speeders and you did it anyway, then paying a stupidity tax is too good for you. What a moron. I am not sympathetic and neither should anybody else. You admit to going no less than 40% above the posted speed limit and now expect leniency? Am I the only one here on an island?
