Playa Names

Postby sparklefairyprincess » Fri Sep 30, 2011 5:29 pm

Were you given a playa name this year, or in years past? What is your playa name?

My friends and I were causally biking down the street when we were stopped by a tall shirtless dude in shorts with shoulder length brown hair and a fedora on. He claimed to "Buzz" the Official Playa Name Giver, anointed by Larry himself, an attendee of the First BM ever on the beach in SF, runner of the "Playa Names" Booth. He said that when he gives a name, he touches the top of the persons head and blanks his mind out, receiving an appropriate name from above. He then proceeded to name all in our posse... the names given were Badger, Tornado, Stabwound, Spike, and mine was Super Girl.

Just wondering in anyone else has met this fellow, or recieved a playa name (from anyone), and what is it? I would love to hear some stories :)

I received mine on a MOOP weekend from a member of DPW. I cant remember who it was, but I remember pulling in to the camp, stepping out of my VW van and having someone yell - "Hey! It's hookahdude!!!" and there was a round of cheers and an alcholic beverage was handed to me. 2 weeks later, SFGate published an article about the DPW weekend and my pic was the lead pic in the article - complete with the name hookahdude forever attached to my likeness in the article.

No to being given a playa name this year or in years past. I got the name from a homicidal fossil that nearly did me in on some glacier 13 years ago. Fortunately he wasn't successful (and has since changed his ways, he now hangs out on my desk), and when prompted for a username on some online thing shortly after I changed the i to a y in an failed attempt to seem clever. When I moved from New York to California it became a nickname offline among my new friends, and has since just become the name I go by.

And most assuredly not Simple Simon.

The real question is what is Larry Harvey's off-playa name?

I don't think I'd want to be named by some random stranger. (But that might also depend if I liked the name he came up with or not.)

maybe next year, jk, we should all bring in some shiny new playa names to the meet n' greet and then each draw one from the hat (graidawg would oblige, I'm sure) and use it for the next year. Then it might not be a stranger, but will still be random.

I know 7 Badgers from the playa...2 of them here in Vegas alone. Anyone offering up that name is kind of doing a disservice...

Back in the summer of '98 I was on a glacier walk in northern Canada (with a group... we traveled onto the glacier on this crazy ass vehicle with 6' tires). Walking around on this 1000' thick chunk of ice, wandering around near the side, I hear a crackling sound and then this hunk of rock containing said fossil falls a few hundred feet down and lands at my feet (the process is called 'spalling' - it's what happens when water gets into the cracks, freezes and swells, breaking off the piece). I'm still in this kind of 'holy shit' mode as I realize the rock missed my head by maybe a foot and a half and hey, it's got this fossil on it, and the guide comes over and just kind of shrugs it off "oh, that's just a trilobite," and then goes on to explain how common they were, and how I didn't even have to register the find and could probably take it home (like there was a chance I wouldn't).

I think that would be a fun idea--especially for the newbies that don't already have a playa name!

I got the name Starbuck this year...it was originally Starfucker, since one of my favorite things about the burn is to actually be able to see the stars (I'm a bit of an astronomy nerd), but that was too close to Starfuckers. So it morphed into Starbuck, since I'm also a very vocal fan of Battlestar Galactica

"Kickstand" or "Zipper"

Random people would yell these names at me outta nowhere as I wended my way thru the city.

Both apparently were often down when they should have been up.

I like them both tho.

Perhaps you should have named yourself Lorne Greene, as he had a more stentorian voice.

Postby Nipple » Sat Oct 01, 2011 10:52 am

The name Nipple predates the Playa by a few years. I'm part of a Unicycle gang in PDX (Unicycle Bastards). We took part in a chariot war, and I ended up in the chariot because my unicycle was damaged. The person that built my wheel used a pneumatic tool that stripped all of the nipples on my spokes, leaving the wheel ready to taco at any moment. Then, while getting ready for the chariot war, I had to tape down MY nipples to keep the rings from getting snagged, hit, or otherwise mutilated.

Henceforth my Bastard name was "Nipple" and those are the people I came out to BRC with, so it just kind of followed with me.

Please see the attached video reference multiple medias. I'm in the chariot that's drawn by the unicycles. Moments after we pass, you'll see is get rammed by a giant hamster ball. That hit destroyed our chariot wheel and took us out.
