Jiffy Pop on the ashes of the Man

Postby LittleJack » Wed Aug 24, 2011 6:11 pm

Yep, this year I'm bringing Jiffy Pop to pop over the still hot ashes of the Man on Sunday morning! Wanted to do it for ages.

Yes, I know there's huge MOOP potential, and I intend to be quite careful with it.

My advise is to microwave your popcorn and be done with it. Jiffy Popping it on "...the still hot ashes of the Man...' is such a remarkably bad idea I wonder sometimes if the Darwin Awards weren't thought up for people like you.

By the time Sunday morning rolls around, hippies are sleeping in the ashes. Why wake them up?

*nervous, shaky hand raising from the back of the room*

Umm.. but teacher.. why besides the possible MOOP factor is that such a bad idea? If the kid wants to do it.. let him!

I don't get why its a bad idea either?
Doc, please enlighten us.....
O wait, you're already on the road probably, so we'll just have to wait tell September to get the answer.

I'd say, fuck waiting for the ashes to cool so you can get close.
Get a piece of 1/2" EMT,10', use some bailing wire or shit even an wire clothes hanger, wrap that handle of the jiffy pop to the emt, and hold that shit over the fire right after the man falls.
Obviously you wont get close enough with out it hurting with out the 10' stick.

I'm probably about to be persecuted for saying this but, after all that ash and shit comes off the man burn, a think a few extra pop corn kernels aint gonna make or break the event.
Why don't ya stick your head in that hole and find out? ~piehole

Well, usually you put Jiffy Pop in the microwave, not in the toaster oven. If you put a bag of it on the hot man ashes, the bag will likely catch fire and burn. Then the kernels will fall into the ashes. Then after about 5 more minutes, the kernels will start popping and flying about at random. Sounds like good fun to me. :D

Huh? I don't think you're thinking of Jiffy Pop - that's a whole other beast we used back when dinosaurs roamed the earth and most people didn't have microwaves. :D

This is Jiffy Pop in action:

ooooo.. now that you put it that way, I say just run up with a 10lb bag of popcorn.. dump and run!

..and yeah it looks like you guys are mistaking Jiffy Pop as pictured above for microwave popcorn. Jiffy Pop.. the camping trip stuff. Sealed. Set on fire. Poofs up.

I love it how people over-react on the internet.

Do it, it sounds like a great idea.

So.... Jiffy Pop on man-ashes = death?
You'd think with a handle like Dr Pyro, you'd like creative uses of fire.

But hell, while we're at it, who wants to bring a griddle and fry some bacon?

Great idea! Jiffy pop is one of the most exciting/ satisfying things in the world. The smoke from cooking on an open fire always makes the popcorn more yummy :P

FYI this idea has actually been set in motion and we're planning a bacon cooking party now for sometime late morning/early afternoon on Sunday.

We're calling it Sunday communion. PBR for the wine, man cooked bacon for the bread.

Darwin himself would perfer the microwave bags considering it is what has EVOLVED from the stovetop expanding aluminum bag that looks like a kings crown. Speaking of MOOP, the 10lb. dump and run (like that idea), and a huge amount of ashes. Exactly what is done with all of the ashes? Are they bulldozed up and shipped out in dump trucks??

I don't know how they are shipped out, but that's more or less what happens.

i bet a good deal of the ashes proper leave with folks as souvenirs. but there is that layer of gravel-like substrate they put down on all the burn perimeters. That's probably fun to scrape up with some kind of toy from heavy equipment.

also, i think the idea of jiffy popping on the man = awesome.

and a little more tasteful than doing it on the temple :D

I see no issues with Jiffy Pop as long as:

  • You get a long enough handle/device to hold the Jiffy Pop over the flames. Remember Jiffy Pops come with short metal handles.
  • Whatever you use to hold the Jiffy Pop supports the weight until it's done popping.
  • You don't hold it over the heat too long and the dang thing explodes everywhere.

I actually saw somebody Jiffy-Popping at the Man this year; was it you, OP?

I got swept away in the tide of naked folks circling the flames, so, did not see how the popcorn came out.

I have a Sunday morning pic from 1999 of a hippie wrapped in space blanket, sleeping on the ashes of the Man. Looked like a human Jiffy Pop. Somebody remind me to rescan that.
