video camera on the playa

Postby Raven9940 » Sun Aug 21, 2011 1:49 pm

So I'm thinking of bringing a video camera with me this year. It's on older model panasonic mini dv camera. Can anyone with experience using video cameras on the playa tell me if it's worth it and what kind of care to take? Will mini dv cassettes withstand the heat? What should I be worried about?

Read the "Cameras and Multimedia" guidelines before you wory about if it will live. but really, no camera captures the playa. it is a First person enviroment. (some times 4th person omnipresent)

Used on of those many years ago, it worked fine, no issues whatsoever.

Mini DV was used to make this film : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laPD73uf ... ure=relmfu

at the end of the first chapter, you can see a glitch that happens. that is from playa dust. magnetic tape and playa dust don't like each other. Keep your tapes sealed, and always record a bit of blank footage at the beginning, and end, to protect your footage.

have fun. if your camera is of any kind of size, it's like a white elephant, everyone knows your there.

All video requires a signed agreement with the Org and a tag on the camera. See the media guidelines. BTW - doesn't matter if you are professional or not, still gotta register.
Basic b/e analysis:
2005 $243K
06 $855K
07 $1.0M
08 $1.1M
09 $0
10 $1.1M
11 $1.2M
12 $1.2M
That’s $6.8M that thousands of volunteers deserve to know about. Capitalism is alive at BM. Tickets are the commodity. Others have estimated higher profits.

No tag required this year according to the Burning Man website. I shot video last year with an HDV cam - looks great !

Read again, ALL video cameras still require a tag.

In fact so do pretty much ALL still cameras also, if they are capable of recording even a few seconds of video( and what cameras don't nowadays?)

Conflicting information -

NEW FOR 2011: Personal Use videocameras will NOT receive a camera tag, but still must fill out a Personal Use Agreement prior to use. Only professional media cameras will carry tags in 2011. All participants are encouraged to visit Media Mecca to ask questions or learn more about this process.

Is this "Personal Use Agreement" form available online somewhere? Can we print one out and fill it in prior to arrival or this all done with playa dust underfoot?

Many new digital still cameras can now take HD movies. If teh BMOrg is still differentiating between still camera and video, then they got some catching up to do. :)
