Spammers proliferating

Postby Igneouss » Mon Aug 08, 2011 5:48 pm

Sure would be nice if someone could delete a few of them.
Basic b/e analysis:
2005 $243K
06 $855K
07 $1.0M
08 $1.1M
09 $0
10 $1.1M
11 $1.2M
12 $1.2M
That’s $6.8M that thousands of volunteers deserve to know about. Capitalism is alive at BM. Tickets are the commodity. Others have estimated higher profits.

yeah, I get the sense that whacking the spammers has become a full time gig. Is there some way you can deputize people with limited ability to kill threads? I'd be glad to smack 'em. I would only smack the egregious stuff - Frogfuffic, etc.

You're not kidding it's getting to be full-time, that hronchik bastard has had over 130 posts (and counting) since sometime after 3pm PDT.

I can't make any promises just yet, but I'm working on it.

I really wish someone would explain to me why there is spam being dropped here. There has to be some sort of human intervention at some point, and some of this shit is not even in English, and the words on much of this cannot be read. Is there a hope that some fool will actually click on this and give them a credit card to buy something? There are definately people sitting in dimly lit rooms in some foreign country who are trying to make money with this--I just don't see how.

My guess is that they are running scripts that find websites with phpBB installed, add them to a list, and then automatically create accounts and post stuff.

There is no incentive to identify which boards are more likely to produce sales and which ones would never. You just blast them all. And as long as some idiot somewhere actually buys from them, we all have to suffer.

(That's the interesting question. Who the fuck get's some spam, and then says: Yeah, I want a bigger dick, and buys from them).

Adolescent boys? And, well, if they can sell tiger and bear parts to chinese men trying to improve their virility, they can sell anything to that crowd. (The improve the virility crowd, chinese and every other ethnic group.) Some people can't get their doctors to approve viagra, I bet. And prawn makes men think that everyone carries that much between their legs...

I love that sig, AntiM.

I was tempted to do the same with the following new piece o' spam:

Each one of us desires to know something about our future. We want to know something about our future love life, career, cheap Chanel handbags, and work. Some even wants to know how they are going to die, and when are they going to die. -- Keziyouyouq

but it exceeded the maximum number of characters allowed for signatures when added to my others, which are hilarious to me and must not be compromised.

If only the spammers had any real clue about this site, we'd all be in trouble. Imagine a world where the frogfufffics hawked ticket offers, cheap tents, blinky things, faux fur, or bulk quantity zip ties?

If you've been following the boards, I think you'll notice that spammer activity has dropped quite a bit in the last few days. We'll continue to keep working at it, so hopefully no need to stand on a desk, post enlarged pics, or make any phone calls.

I didn't enlarge the photo, just sniped it and uploaded it to photobucket. It didn't look big there either. I know you're working your ass off trilobyte, but I haven't noticed any difference in the volume of spam. Perhaps it's my timing?

It is timing. I'm an early riser in a different time zone, so sometimes I have deleted a bucketful of spam before anyone hits the board. Other mods get it other times. Up to a hundred posts a day when they're really active. Seems like as soon as one gets knocked down, others take up the slack.

I'm in the central time zone and, in the morning, I can't find anything but spam in 'show new posts'. :(

I don't think anybody is complaining about the job the mods are doing. I think the complaint lies in the fact that they still have to do it. The complaint is with admins that are "too busy" to install the fixes that would stop spam from even being posted.

I'm also tired of the excuse that they can't do it now because they are too busy with "the event". So are the rest of us that rely on eplaya in our preparations. If they are too busy to do it, they need to subcontract it out to be done. And trilobite, please don't insult us by trying to defend their behavior and make excuses for them. There is no valid excuse.

I know it's not the fault of the mods that read this thread. My question was, if they haven't been listening to you guys then would they listen to us? Sometimes it takes many voices to get the wheels greased.

I think a smart and quick fix is to delete the users who are blatant spammers--like froggfukker etc. Dump the users and there will be a challenge to keep added them back in. A list of abusers needs to be given to an admin for dumping. It wouldn't take long to do that.

My offer, as someone who sits before a computer 8:30-5 near daily with little else to do, to assist with deleting spam threads as they pop up is still there.

LOL That's funny. Not that your offer isn't appreciated, but if they don't even trust the current mods to give them permission to delete user accounts, it's naive of you to think they would add additional moderators! Haven't you heard? The admins are too busy and they don't trust anyone else to do their job for them either.  :? :x

I'm not even talking about deleting accounts, or doing anything but deleting threads to keep the main page free. Who's "they?"

A current mod could secretly give me their log in info and I could do it.

"They" = BMORG or Admins

Yes, I guess a mod could do that. Would they? I doubt it; but then I'm not a mind reader. But I certainly agree that until they (the admins of BMORG) install the spam blocking module, the board needs as many spam warriors as possible.

People are listening, wheels are turning, our most recent list should be processed (blocking 47 more nuisances that we've identified) on Monday, admin privileges should be sorted in the next week, and a decent sized list of additional issues will get actioned as quickly as possible (some before the burn, some after). There are a couple back end issues to work out before we can get a challenge question or Captcha thing set back up for account creation, it sounds like something that won't get to be addressed until post-burn. As for deputization, I think that one will be a go as well.

Dr. Jet, I suspect time zone may be what skews things for you. AntiM is a time zone behind you, so while she knocks a bunch off when she gets up, you've got the jump on her. I think the rest of us (or most of the rest of us) are west coasters, and even though I'm usually up late there's a few hours gap where things probably pile up a bit. Once the list I mentioned above gets processed that should lighten things up quite a bit, and once the admin privileges are taken care of we'll be in a position to be even more proactive.
