BRC Gay Pride Parade 2010

Georige Boy and the Gay Pride Parade

Postby Mister Jellyfish Mister » Wed Feb 23, 2011 10:11 am

Hello. I'm the artist responsible for the art installation destined for Burning Man 2011 entitled "Georgie Boy: Fallen Queen of Broadway" which is a comedic piece following on the heals of my project last year, "Ein Hammer". I'm straight, I live in the suburbs, and it is my fondest wish that you consider either starting or ending this year's Burning Man Gay Pride Parade at the Georgie Boy installation.

Here is the website for the project on which we are already well on our way with construction: www.GeorgieBoy.org and this is a link to some of the most recent discussion about it here on ePlaya: viewtopic.php?t=37761&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=gay+pride+parade&start=180

If I do the receive the honorarium grant from Burning Man that I have applied for, I can offer promotion of the parade through that presence including the audio art tour we will record for the installation.

If anybody would kindly put me in touch with the person in charge of this year's parade, I'd be most obliged.

The Kickstarter fundraiser is also at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mi ... burning-ma should you care to consider making a pledge to the art.

Respectfully,

-Mister Jellyfish.

Can anyone please tell me who is actually involved with the Gay March, I would like to speak with them. I think it will take other gay men (like myself) and women to say "Hey enough is enough, stop!" because coming from a straight person a gay person may not believe, understand or maybe appreciate the message but maybe they would understand coming from a fellow gay man or women.

If the Gay Pride March at Burning Man is NOT to be taken serious than it is mocking the notion or idea by saying that equal rights is a joke, that's not good. If they are serious well that is not good either because everyone at Burning Man already has a "Live and let Live" attitude or should have that attitude, if someone goes to burning man and does NOT have any open mind, ....well lets just say they are in the wrong place! In fact I'm 100% sure that person will be escorted off the Playa quickly.

It feels like a Gay March comes across with a strong aggressive, negative Militant approach/attitude which creates a really bad environment for everyone.

I will cringe every time I see the Gay March for sure because Burning Man is not the place for a gay equal rights political agenda, I'm embarrassed!

If it's not for you, don't participate in the March. There will be a lot to keep you busy, and they are NOT going to stop just because you're also gay and feel strongly about it. For some folks, this might be the only city in which they feel safe admitting that they're gay, and can march with pride wearing a big gay label. Maybe some folks need this march. Don't waste your energy trying to dissuade them. Feel fortunate that you don't need this particular pride parade. That you are embarrassed by it will not be fatal. :)

I am not unsympathetic to where you seem to be coming from. There was also someone on ePlaya who was hoping to arrange a Slut March at the Burn. Women in the default world have been arranging Slut Marches around the world where they wear what they want, march around, and basically dare people to try and stop them. It has some neat elements to it. It's probably freeing.

Would I participate in one at Burning Man? Hell, NO. Because I already know I have the freedom to wear what I want in Black Rock City without being harassed, and I really don't want to be reminded of the repressive outside world up North here, where donning the first sleeveless blouse of the year (oo, spicy) invites men in passing trucks to yell scary things. (Not like it stops me.)

But maybe these Slut Marches and Pride Parades are something that someone else needs.

Who are we, to tell them not to do it?

Keep your conscience clean and come to the Critical Dicks march instead, we don't care about agendas or anything at all really... except your dick.

We meet at Noon, on thursday, straight in front of the Man.
We have an obligation to make space for everyone, we have no obligation to make that space pleasant.
