Camp in a tent if you can't afford the RV, that's what everyone else does.
We have an obligation to make space for everyone, we have no obligation to make that space pleasant.

Rent a U-haul pick up truck, $20 a day (or buy a semi-decent Chevy pick up $1,500.00) add a towing hitch, to either, buy a beater towable RV trailer (maybe a $1000.00) and gift it/them both away after the burn...don't forget to remove the tow hitch from the U-haul pick up before returning.
Have premiere AAA and check the wieght limit...the towables are light, especially a pop-up...but bech...get a solid one.

If you rent the U-haul pick up truck, return it the $20.00 a day U-haul in Reno after a good car wash wand spraying...don't forget the motor/under the hood!

Seriously it could be done....or that might be a risky nightmare.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Junglesmacks knows/spelled out in a thread, a great way to save with a budget box truck...it ain't fancy but you're camping! Sheesh! Do you really need a rolling HOUSE?
I KNOW junglesmacks method works, lifetime GERLACH locals taught me! but I ended up in a different camp so I haven't tried it, yet.
It costs like under $1000.00 total for the whole week (maybe 10 days, I think)
(btw, SW Air Credit Card gives a virtually FREE plane ticket deal too...round trip anywhere they fly. PM me if you want info. I just got mine)
Junglesmacks buget box truck method;
Fly to Reno, get box truck, shop, get super cheap hotel room, drive to playa, make shade, pop up tent shower, basically that is it. It ain't the moon! (I am the moon...haha)
(listen tp ygmir...but junglesmacks/GERLACHS method DOES work..if you like to SAVE $..find it and read about it..use search or PM Junglesmacks)
How to get super cheap room; send a Casino Hotel MONEY, say $500 maybe $1000, before you arrive for "markers" that you cash in for chips BUT do NOT gamble...just make ONE bet at a table game..black jack, roulette, whatever is easy, then cashier cage time, pick up chips walk away, go get CASH, leave Casino hahaha....Also, let them sign you up for the "players club(s) they'll mail you room offers from here to the moon. Do it at many casinos, Sands, Peppermill, Atlantis, Circus, Silver Legacy, Eldorado,Grand Sierra..basically all the BIG ones! They will often send you free first room coupns for NICE suites. No money pre sent...this must be done in person...and if they read this they won't mind...they hope some will gamble...(maybe)
If this is NOT useful to you, someone else may read it ok?
Karma does NOT work the way you think btw...and Budget is burner freindly!
Karma is predestined, I think, from your other lives or whatever...need to
re-ask my hippie expert. hahaha.
Karma in USA is "what goes around comes around"
Lovelight do you have others that are semi handy with tools?
for the beater, maybe method?
Don't forget the big gas cost from L A, yikes!
Sorry, too much coke.......cola........oh, uh coca cola...*snort* burp, 1980's* hahaha...remember it is a camping trip! JS says Budget saves you big bucks!
I'm the MAN in a truck, burner who is stuck, you're in luck! I'll whip out my BIG tow chain and not charge you, not even one lousy buck!
You can set up a hell of a rig in the back of a UHaul as well.
Goodwill furniture, shower, toilet, AC. All doable for a lot less than you think. Or try Boise Idaho Area RV rental places, SLC is also in range.
A carport caN be bought for about $200, camo netting for less than $100 and all the stakes and tools you'll need to secure it, for under $100. AND! If you know how to pack, it can fly back with you! RVs are only good for shitting and showering in. How come tents are soo hard to bring from overseas? The normally pack up neatly...
Now that I think about it, you may want to arrange a donation on the carport.
Just a thought...
yes, agreed!
get cheap canvas chairs, (if goodwill sold out of stuffed chairs) mattress, can be blow up, they rarely sell them real ones here used for cheap (bed bug bull shit problems, that is gross) slam mattress against wall druing day time, slam back down to sleep, if box truck is big enough leave it on the floor and crash on it, just do NOT pop it,,hehehe...
toilet? i guess could do a 5 gal bucket method w/kitty litter method...agh...for emergencies,
ac why? aren't they from assuie land? they're accustomed to roasting in the heat? (most are I think hahaha) js says stays cool anyway...
a heavy curtain was his only regret and will bring one 2011...it's all in his post...
do NOT forget a chandelier! whoa, you'll not get that beverly hills/bel air feeling...total bummer! I'm being a smart ass because i had this thing all cleaned up and condensed and concise and it got posted before it was ready...friggin pc gremlins!
you see lovelight...we totally have utter respect for burners who come from soooooooooo far away! ungh, was trying to help and it went *poof* you got 99% though, ok?
I think they make blow up disco balls...can use that instead of the yuppie chandelier, ok? bring laser pens too...
mdm u-haul maybe a hassle or flake, depends which u haul place and they flaked on ME for a move once non burningman weekend sheesh!...js swears by budget, raving..says the cool dude will even let them ship stuff...(maybe best for usa only people?) and he'll store it....cool dude at budget not js,,,lol
omfg! js is cool too!
stay away from u haul place if that guy at the counter is the one who's teeth are rotten! falling out! that means he is the one who is addiced to meth! he flaked and we had to use my pick up truck so much hassle! tweakers suck...i think he's been let go...boo hoo...
just use flashlights and little battery coleman lamps and buy SHIT LOADS of cool leds, blinkies, el wire for night time fun.......some led xmas light strands for the big box budget truck....sounds like they are gonna sleep late and stay up until 4 am...hahaha...so from 4 am to what 6 am who the frick needs much camp lighting? what burgin stays in camp at night? not I...lol....and i'm 48! coolneon.com and other sites on main bm website...coolneon classy burners...others on ebay, ah? not sure...just skip that potential drag (btw, tiny batteries SUCK....at least changing them does...so leave er blinkies on "flash mode" they'll last all week and remember to TURN THEM off after subrise...lmao.
solar shower bag $10 and shower tent thing $40 cement tub for grey water for showers what $10? do the box truck...
big water cube jugs for showering water BUT those suare one gallon jugs for drinking, less mess and easy to CHUG straight from the jug! and doesn t get to be a dusty friggin mess...vitalite less water chugging and (piss runs) or agtor aide...blech, orange is only decent flavor....nice fake oj, ez to make too
on budget truck or schmuck truck, try to cover the ugly logo if you can....with a )'( done in a spray painted thrift store sheet...one for each side
use what to attach the sheet over logo? duct tape? not sure...
what will they use for poles for the camo shade netting? cheap 2x4's? like $2 each low cost and made in america! hahaha (you get to donate or burn them on the man bonfire site...hehehe...best to donate though)
there's a bunch of threads on these rv and maybe box truck methods...non lavish rv ways to do it...spend extra munny on fun stuff! outfits and body lighting...not making some rv comapny rich...(unless a burner owned company...hahaha...)
heck i saw a reno virginia street u haul selling several small box trucks for DOGS sake for $2,500! buy it, maybe can sell it for half when you go? every body wins...i might need one for my frightening golf cart! hahaha...drive to playa, park u haul junker, drive away in golf cart, return days later exhausted, sleep, rinse and repeat (for me that means a shower, ok!?!!) no that gross! ....oh and we can take it to some scary on playa graffiti paint shop...very cool! paint the cat and box truck...cart not cat...ha ha ha...it's a lion so i leave him at my abode...
do easy finger food...
bring square gallon jugs of water for drinking chug right from jug...get big ass cubes for shower etc water...vitalyte or blech gatoraide..orange only decent flavor...like nice fake fast oj! ez to make and works for a good screwdriver! skip the ice just drink it warm...this ain't paris! it can be at night though..schweet!
nice cheap legal drugs in america if you catch a cold! yum! nomnomnomnom
sorry this is such a messy post, i really am going down here,,,hahaha...a rare codiene bender...thanks doc!
everyone will help more...cough syrup is kicking in, i am feeling all warm an gooshy... 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) *faceplant*
Nononono.. Uhaul is now 110% burner UN-friendly, and either will not let you rent round trip rentals during those days or at all. Same with Penske. The ONLY completely burner friendly truck rental in Reno (as has been currently verified.. correct me if I'm wrong) is Budget on Gentry Way.
Here is my thread on my box truck experience FWIW..
viewtopic.php?t=37536
..and yeah, Joe @ Budget at Gentry Way is one super cool cat. When I went, he had even made up a pamphlet that was on the counter entitled "Why We Rent to Burners". I mean, come on. He was all excited telling me how next year they were going to try and offer more packages and accommodations to us. Also, try dropping off a completely uncleaned RV with dust all over it to the rental agency and see what they do. They did it all for $100 extra, that's it. You'd spend that much and 6 hours of your time trying to clean it yourself and STILL not get it right. Hell, pick up the phone now and talk to him. He's the one that answers the phone there and he'll answer any questions to have. Great resource to the community..
I spent the last month looking for suitable RV's at the right prices..
I have only this morning managed to book a 5-6 berth 25ft cabover RV from Road Bear in San Francisco for 11 days with supplementary insurance, 1x 500 mile package (cheaper to just pay the rest based on my google earth calculations for the distance back), full convenience, toilet and kitchen sets for all occupants at a grand total of $1875....
I have found that if you go with a third party, the cost of the camper is about half the price than if you go direct to the company. Also, they didn't mention that they don't rent to burners, just that they block out a higher deposit on the card until it is returned in the condition it was picked up in...
I've even set up a cleaning rota for the van for whilst it is at BM...
Nowt like a bit of forward planning!
I have a very strict limited use policy on the toilet/wash basin - strictly NO use of the onboard shower during the week as it uses up all the fresh water
I figure we can fiscally afford to have the grey & black emptied once during the week... then at a campsite before returning it.. .we aren't returning it until the wednesday after the burn
As for showers, we are going to construct a solar shower/evap pond and bring extra bowsers of water which can be transported in the van with the bikes/food/drink/coolers....
Bikes can be stored chained together underneath the van under a tarp when not in use... extra tarp shelter and frame will do for communal shade..
I WILL be enforcing the above
Yes, for some/most there is a recession raging! Very wise decision and maybe, WE or JS can figure out HOW to make a quick and easy cover for the logos on the side
WE can try to figure it out here!
Use a cheap tarp with rope and wrap it around top and both sides? Tie with rope under boxtruck?
Nice to hear cool ($mart) rental truck guy, Joe, has plans to do more packages...perhaps many boxtrucks can be accumulated and waiting in Reno for long distance burners! (and a cargo towable type for me n my weird cart...haha)
@Love With $ you save, after the burn, you can go to SF Bay Area and LIVE there! Ya hear that SF! More on the way! To YOUR bay! yeah! Hahaha....or at least visit SF then go to Redwoods up North a bit to EeL River, @Rockefeller Grove a very very special 22 mile trail and can backpack or park box truck KOA or other park n camp places...need bug spray there!
It takes YEARS to find "stumpless" redwood forests, (at least it took ME years! lmao) I won't go to logged ones....Rockefellers saved this place (a "gift" hahaha)....also Mc Grath State Park is close by and is the same (no river and multitude of shades of greens from sun pouring in above Eel River opening in he sky) Mc Grath is known for biggest ferns! Chest high! I like to lay on my back and look UP at the sky through the redwood tree tops...then look into the thick darker forest...timeless there...prehistoric almost..schweet...like look up, then down...do NOT get "lost" there...easy to do...stay on the trail along the river!! Nice little camp spots, even day hikes...and little swimming holes every so often few miles...I think it's safe from the "farmers" around there...stay on the trail and don't go toooo far into the redwoods from I was told! Very busy and never logged, so lots of ( maybe? rangers and) tourists...this goes for everyone reading...the more people enjoy it the better right now...budget cuts for parks...burners and others can help...just by going and enjoying the area...use it or we lose it, do some MOOPing too! Porbably not too bad, just near the road. Go up the trail do NOT just sit at the pick nik tables and strum a guitar..take it with you!
Try to find glass beaches along coast...also schweet! created by very very old Victorian dumps, found at Southerly ends of beaches usually...but do NOT take sea glass anymore...it is "protected" except for some artists who volunteer to clean beaches and such...they get to take some of the sea glass (I have some from before the change) the sea glass goes 200+ feet deep! even if you scuba dive waaaaaaaaay out and go down 200+ feet! every shade of every color (and bottle neck glass rings ) you can imagine! china dishes sea glass too..weird place to kill a day or two.
Some are located at sunken graveyards with arches out to nude beaches! Spooky climbing back UP over headstones though! agh! careful what tpes of mushrooms you "find" there...omg! and leave the bones alone! those my relatives! just kidding, I'm not related or from there but yes...some graves and headstones are sorta crumbling in! the Daffodils and grassy surface offset that sight a bit...and yes, you can pick Gourmet Hedgehog mushrooms (again don't get lost hanzel and grettle)...these make a great brown juicy sauce just by saute in a pan in butter...yum....grill pork chops and pour juice over if camping! EZ! nomnomnomnom This is near where Hitchcock filmed the "The Birds" ... spooky, eerie place...kinna like the smoke n dust when the playa gets socked in! MuAh hahaha... My new film will be "A Murder of Crows" hahaha...we start filming next week!
Try Fort Bragg dune something or other beach park..famous HUGE sea glass beach there...sorry hippies, I spilled the beans! (it's at the SOUTH END!!!!!!!! of that huge dune beach park...forgot the name but it's infamous)
OK, back to the playa burn;
So uh, yeah LL I skipped some "hygene stuff" hahaha..
@yggy...yup, you're right!---> LoveLight don't freak out, k? $ave munny hunny.. so uh lovelight... you must bring big&small ziplock bags for baby wipes if no shower thing..do the shower too! both BB wipes & shwr!/splooge bucket buy @ homeless depot w/lid/...and piss jugs (you can/must drink a GALLON of water on the way to playa..first jug is then empty ready! got that!?)..blech but yea...and maybe try not to park too too close to JOTS...or down wind of them...ew...
2011 I'm using that vitalite stuff, less pissing!? less hassles with pee jugs...ugh...but I NEVER felt weary...tons of water, plenty of food...can NOT keep me down nor YOU n the boyfreind if you chug water! eat some food!
Indestructable this way...booze that's yer problem, maybe, I don't know, is it a problem?...I rarely drink much...hahaha..some but NOT tons.
I think Token knows how to explain super cheap food...like $50 per person...ttl..$100...but sounds like you have class or could afford slightly better...screw it, just do pancakes and bacon and easy stuff...I would NOT get all fancy! JS started an awesome thread for easy food too...thanks again JS! Oatmeal which I LIKE and other stuff...EZ!
Many camps get into it and were offering food...for me it was very random but well appreciated! Some camps food was spilling off the tables...feasts...hahaha....I was impressed! Roasted Rabbit and fresh baked bread! My god those guys and girls had it going on!
BTW, I was taught...a spray bottle with 50/50 white vinegar and water for preventing playa foot was the easiest way to do it..right on! Worked for me! Then lotion and back into socks/shoes! I felt some tingling and thought, oh shit...did it second day and everyday..after that. Bring two gallons! Can share, it's cheap!
@Tomservo...yeah, dead batteries just plain suck!
@AntiM...you are stronger than I am! Chandelier sounds shcweet! (I tented 2010) I have costco carport and tent (or random RV's or cargo trailer of my own..I was in 3 camps eventually...lol..plz don't ask, it was odd! sorta! :)
@Iso, yea, I like metal tents...cargo trailer (mine or rent one if mine is crammed full)...with a frightening cart too! vroom, putt putt....and off I go! ever so slooooooow...where to, hell, I won't exactly know!
LoveLight don't get too confused and don't bring everything listed everywhere! You'd end having enough for like 40 people! (I sorta did that mistake...haha) It worked out great, gave a bunch away...I use my carport here and now at default abode but cleaning the extra stuff..whoa! what a
J O B...lil less "stuff" next time depending on where I camp.
Finally, I plan to have the midgetartcart, so that's why I said "slam mattress against wall, drive cart into box, then drive cart out at playa and slam mattress back down on floor" er something like that, didn't I? Anyway, I would NOT want you to POP your airmattress...be careful! LONG DISTANCE TRAVELERS DO NOT NEED THIS BUMMER! Pounding yes, SLAMMING NOooo!
Mine is a REAL mattress in storage...can take both. Slamming, Pounding you name it! hahahaha....cannot pop it! Haven't yet at least! hahaha! :wink:
I hope some of this added stuff helps! Cough syrup has worn off, phew! :oops:
Better than reading a book only, books help but this is a talking book!
Ask, and it will answer! :D
Ok so the thread drift maybe is not my entire fault here! Also, dig and mine and ASK JS! He seems to know what newbies and sophomores NEED! The 8th sense...
We covered our Budget rental truck with a roll of newsprint and blue painters tape and spray paint. we transformed the words "truck rentals" into "fuck regrets" and taped our real home address numbers "1650" to the side of the truck so that our late arrival could find us.
No offense intended to the regulars and mods here...hahaha
They really do put a lot of energy into helping everyone, Thanks!
They have the 8th sense too! MANY GREAT THREADS they create & guide
JS just seemed to post what I NEEDED with good timing...not always...but the easy non-cooler based food & RV/boxtruck thread/post & El Wire thread have been a few "greats" for me from his point of view! Gracias!
LoveLight & Maybe Cheyenne too....if you take your bikes with you when you further your travels... I think you should gift them to a needy kid(s) in whatever city you leave from to fly back home....just a thought!
(maybe tell them about gifts and BM)
Don't rent a bike! Big hassle! Buy and Donate/Gift it away!
I almost drove over a BIKE when I left at dark in non-whiteout dust storm!
It was a Yellow Bike, so I saw it in time!
That was our intention, reserve a few $50 bikes at Wal-Mart to pick up at one of their shops somewhere near san-fran and gift them to some kids who could use them before we fly back home... I've got an expensive mountain bike over here and certainly wouldn't try and bring it over to USA! - So cheapy bikes a go go....
Having the biggest expense booked has made me feel a bit more relaxed until the tix go on sale in Jan
that is nice, the bike plan and yeah, the cheapo bikes are just fine.
@ wally mrt ( :cry: ) can also get baskets and lighting, maybe another $50 to $80? total? so that plus bike cost.... and can keep the lighting for future burns or gift to lower income burner young adults...not sure if you need front and back lights for bikes but the metal mesh baskets for maybe ONE bike front handle bars were only $13! bike $57+$13..only $70
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OR JUST WEAR SHIT LOADS OF FUN BODY LIGHTS! Use headlamp! and back pack can skip bike basket too....get a coolneon backpack el wire kit!
We had so much body lighting it was stupid! but FUN...hahaha...long story but was asked to gift out over 5000! glowing things...omg! plus what I brought from 4th of July concession gig I did...holy crap! had to give them out in bulk! was like a JOB! Found the lower income burner kids on the dusty back streets and gave them whole tubes and boxes and any age btw...everyone loved it!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
maybe boxtrucks & RVs can form an orphan camp? (even if just 2 or up to 8?)
think of the massive shade tarping you could accomplish! without doing the major metal poles and such....someone knows how (I don't, sorta but)
More experienced burners can help cover eye sore logos AND advise on how to stretch/attach "non-shredding in a wind storm tarping" i think....need bungies perhaps? for the stretch effect so it won't snap the tarps n ropes?
Harbor Freight...very low cost! tarps and bungies! and ropes etc close to air port too
I would not want it to create a big awful wall facing your street, duh, too fun to watch and engage everyone...don't wall yourself off!
I sorta saw that and was weird-ish...very very expensive rv's like a rectangular caravan in a Western...blech...snobby... :cry:
just a thought :mrgreen:
I think the teenagers from Gerlach mentioned you to me! Hushville for sure!
Was one of the first villages I ever heard of! You do NOT want me, yet, I am too LOUD....but I will come to HFWA to check it out and say Hello! :lol:
They said "If you want quiet go camp in Hushville but we will get chased out, they KNOW us there!" hahaha
Cannot blame you one bit! They get bored and are tear ups! But have good values, deep down, often from what burningman did when it changed the entire towns outlook on life! All positive stuff! (Ger has a few, grouchy old timers but meh, even they are melting in a good way)
AntiM is an Ambassador for long distance travelers! I learned from her and a few others long distance travelers NEED extra help! (btw, will they allow tenters to fly with a tent? what about the poles and stakes? yikes?!)
