I love the theme. There's so many ways to interpret it. There's no link to capitalism and Fritz Lang's film or class systems unless you choose to interpret the theme that way. Why are you interpreting this intentionally vague theme to represent things you hate? Is it sarcasm?

I'm interpreting it to be a theme about how societies and individuals evolve and drive our own growth, with the shortcomings and failures alongside successes.

And Superman. :P

Who needs themes? Everyone knows Burning Man is all about getting fucked up on booze and drugs; and of course partying all night while attending the massive orgies taking place all around the city.

OK get ready cuz I'm gonna lay it down.

You know how when you go to a museum and they group the art by periods or styles?
Impressionist paintings.
Sculpture.
Tribal art.

It enhances the appreciation of an art piece when you can compare and contrast it to others with similiar values.
We tend to categorize and group things in our minds, and putting art into basic categories can be useful.

THAT'S ALL THE THEME IS.

A concept that unites the Honorarium art pieces on the playa.

The theme is neither irrelevant nor terribly meaningful.

Simply a way to subtly distinguish one year from the next.

The fourth wall is a strange concept to bring up in connection with any event with a focus on interactive art. The fourth wall, in theatre, is that conceptual barrier created between the characters and the audience, that keeps the characters from responding to the audience (and the actors playing the characters pretending that they aren't doing so), and the play from knowing that it's a play.

Interactive art engages the spectator, so the barrier isn't really there, and one seldom sees any serious effort to creative a fictive reality in Black Rock City. So not only have the participants found themselves breaking through the fourth wall at Burning Man, as they must by definition, but they've been smashing it into pieces and burning it for kindling. Which is a good thing - it's what people are there to do.
