Need Old Laptops for "The Outerweb"

Postby miko » Sun Jul 25, 2010 3:18 pm

Hey Everyone,

We're putting together an art project called "The Outerweb", basically a working internet cafe that only allows you to access sites within the cafe itself, all of which will either be absurd, bizarre, poignant, or beautiful.

This is going to be an on-going project, and will revisit the playa year after year with new content, and the old stuff from the previous year for burners to play and interact with.

What we really need to make this happen are donated, old laptops to populate the cafe. We've got one or two at present, but we're looking for 4-6 more. This is going to be a great contribution to the play (at camp Transmorphagon, right on the Esplanade) and any help that the community can render here would be most appreciated!

Thanks!

Miko

I have a PowerBook g4 with a dead DVD drive (works otherwise). Useable for you?

Goz -- that would be a beautiful contribution man, thanks!

If you'd be willing to ship it I can provide you with an address and reimburse you for the cost of shipping. Otherwise shouldn't be an issue if you could drop it off on the playa. Your call...

I'm thinking we should establish a non-profit to make these donations deductable...

Miko - I'm happy to ship it, no reimbursement necessary. I'm curious if I can be one of your fake websites? Maybe you can help me with that. I am photographing on the playa this year and I want to make the photos available on the playa nightly -- a few camps will be projecting (assuming my DVD drive still functions and I can make a slideshow) but a website would be a great/easy way to show stuff.

But I'm not sure that fits in with what you're doing.

Either way, the laptop is yours, I'm just trying to figure out how to wipe it ;-)

Shoot me the address, you can PM me if you prefer.

Best,
Eric / Goz
