Random play on iTunes brings me this:
the Pogues wrote:Ah london you're a lady
Laid out before my eyes
Your heart of gold it pulses
Between your scarred up thighs
Your eyes are full of sadness
Red busses skirt your hem
Your head-dress is a ring of lights
But I would not follow them
Your architects were madmen
Your builders sane but drunk
Among your faded jewels
Shine acid house and punk

You are a scarlet lady
Your streets run red with blood
Oh my darling they have used you
And covered you with mud
It was deep down in your womb my love
I drank my quart of sin
While chinamen played cards and draughts
And knocked back mickey finns

Your piss is like a river
Its scent is beer and gin
Your hell is in the summer
And you blossom in the spring
September is your purgatory
Christmas is your heaven
And when the stinking streets of summer
Are washed away by rain
At the dark end of a lonely street
That's where you lose your pain
'tis then your eyes light up my love
And sparkle once again

They also did Christmas in New York, one of the few Christmas songs that doesn't induce nausea.
Klezmatics did two New York songs--Man in a Hat and This Undoing World.
Leningrad Cowboys have a song called Leningrad. Or maybe we can get their whole catalogue declared "Thematic."
I suppose someone could have a whole project around the "Viennese Waltz."

I was just getting to that. The first one I looked at was weirdly out of sync and I thought it was a fan vid. Then I found this one, which syncs up better and has some different footage, and some of the same footage, so I don't know what to think.
But it's absolutely a great song.

What is it about the Pogues. They can be so lush and Romantic and they can be so punk.
Or is punk simply a sub-set of Romantic?

what is it about Irish drunks in the arts perhaps... can be so beautiful and sad, or rousing and joyous, gets the message in deep. Our folk music history is full of that.

Well, the "nu-ro" or "new romantic," often confused with New Wave, music scene came out of punk.

Punk and romance both require passion - a passion for nihilism, perhaps, but passion just the same.

The Pogues have the glorious combination of the Irish folk sound, sweeping and beautiful and gloomy as the land it's from, the lyricist heart of Shane MacGowan- they're not the only ones to combine it all, just one of the more famous. Flogging Molly being one of the more recent ones.

I was lucky enough to catch this doc, I highly recommend it:

http://www.musicofireland.com/Media/New ... fault.aspx

"Rum, Sodomy and the Lash" was one of the only times I ever got in trouble, music-wise, with my parents. 8)

"Gypsy punk" has been hip, of late. Bands like the Red Elvises have long combined traditional folk music/instrumentation with punk sounds, Gogol Bordello recently got pretty big.

I uh....digress. Is this a thread posting primarly songs @ cities?

i know, i just love that shit...

i recently witnessed a flash mob insta-rave in miami that lasted 15 minutes then disappeared...a car pulled up, suddenly speakers appeared, and then 30 more vehicles showed up and it was on...

african style costumed dancers surrounded the perturbed neighbors and danced in a circle around them chanting "what you gonna do about it" over and over...

after shaking my butt for 10 minutes or so, the sound cut out, the cars vanished, and it was if it had never happened...

a moment i will remember forever.

Nope, not just you. I've been researching popular music from 1890-1920 for our theme camp and had the same feeling. Popular songs from that era (the edison wax cylinders) include Flight of the Bumblebee, Right of Spring, Keep on the Sunnyside, Danny Boy, Pomp and Circumstance and March of the Toys (we would recognize it in the Air Force Hymn.)

The 20s was a musical explosion because of Jazz, Ragtime and the rise of Broadway musicals and due to the increased availability of recorded music. It would be neat to hear that sort of stuff on the playa this year.

Speaking of jazz, I know this is not 20´s , but it is great and I have to share:)

It is Ondrej Pivec Organic Quartet with Bucinatores Orchestra. I was at this specific show, in first row, enjoying sooooooo much. It was made in our school theatre - Disk.

And for all who lives in NYC, Ondrej is now partly based there so you can see him live - worth it!!!

BTW, Fishi, where did you dig in Ondrej Ruml? :D
