Play-a Piano!

Granted, it is difficult to transport a paianna in the trunk of the average automobile. But those of us who have larger vehicles have an amazing opportunity these days: Seems the country is awash in derelict pianos that people are trying to GIVE AWAY!

The reason is simple: Television killed the piano as the main family pastime, and computers buried it.

Craigslist seems to be the place to get them, under “freeâ€

I just added the Grand to the fleet. Also free. It is only a "Baby" Grand, but it sounds much prettier than the Upright.

Do you mean that you want to learn to play it, or that you want to build a Siege Engine for it? I have read that the sound of a piano hitting the ground from a great height should be on everyone's bucket list.

Yes, I think we can create a "BERRAAAAANGGGGGGgggg!!!!" or two. I expect to pick up a couple more derelict pianos; even unplayable ones and take the "harp" out of them to use in some way -- a giant wind chime has been suggested.

the first photo is of a player piano? the little door on the bottom opens and the pedals fold out... at least in the operating version. My family had one and a cabinet full of tin pan alley tunes on paper scrolls. I was probably the only 5 year old in my area who knew all the words to "Ain't she sweet?' and "Big tin pan parade" In the early 80's my mother had it motorized, and it still works well, she finally sold it recently as I never had anywhere to keep it myself, and there was no where else for it. sigh.
something like this one, but mahogany refinished c. 1890

Correct -- the Upright pictured in my first post is a Player. That is, it WAS a Player -- the playing mechanism is gone. So it is a regular play-it-with-your-hands piano now. Will probably go in the Kantina Apokiliptika.

Don't know all the words, but I CAN hum Ain't She Sweet! (...walking down the street... ...tell you very confidentially....) I'm counting on you to perform it on Playa.

I never did post a picture of my Baby Grand yet, so here:

That's my pal Whymcycle Pete admiring it. The action is sitting on top -- it lifts out for ease of servicing! This Baby Grand is scheduled to become a Mutant Vehicle -- unless I find a bigger Grand first.

What makes a lady of eighty go out on the loose?
Why does a gander meander in search of a goose? (this is one of my favorite song lyric rhymes of all times)
What puts the kick in a chicken,
The magic in June?
It's just Elmer's tune.

The sing-alongs by a piano... you're right, who does that anymore? I'll look for some piano fake books: basic song bones: chords, melody and lyrics.

Does this sort of thing require that the objects be symmetrical, or just the striking points on the objects?

Gut reaction: Striking points, and center of mass, and hardness to avoid losing energy to deformation of the objects.

And yes, I think I can do that with a few piano harps. Won't work properly, but should make fun noise. I do have the scaffold towers to hang them from.

If you, or any of you, can pick up one or more of all those free pianos in the Bay Area (on Craigslist), and just get it home to your driveway, I can come and take it from there. What's difficult for me, is to bring a crew with me all the way from Clearlake to extract the piano from the owner/donor's house. Once the Thing is outside, I can winch it up on my trailer.

I have today been challenged, by a friend of mine who is a film maker, to build several motorized upright pianos and hold a demolition derby. To me, this is a simple matter of rounding up lawn tractors (riding lawn mowers) to put the pianos on. (To me, lengthening frames and widening axles is simple.)

Decent lawn tractors go for just a few hundred bucks on Craigslist. You bring me a lawn tractor, and you ride the piano in the demolition derby. Any takers?

Oh... some junk saddles also.

All right….

Image

Left to right: top view of lawn tractor chassis, top view of piano, and end view of piano.

Image

Lawn tractor frame lengthened and front axle extended to one side. (Rear axle is too difficult to widen, so it goes behind the piano.) (Yes, the proportions are off, but I wasn't about to redo it.) Note that engine winds up in the empty space where the pianist’s legs would be.

Image

Off we go to the rodeo / demolition derby.

DMV approval is a separate matter, but this must be doable -- it's Burning Man, for crying out loud. We could accept use restrictions on these -- enclosed arena only.
They would be too tippy to run loose anyway.

You gonna run those with or without the soundboard?

Oh, tangentially related: Are you aware of the work of Colon Nancarrow?

Obscure expatriate American experimentalist composer who wrote for player piano. Fought against Franco & fled to Mexico where he composed amazing works for player piano.

The soundboard? Don't know. Only recently learned what a soundboard is. What do you suggest? Why would I remove it? The idea is to make Maximum Silly Fun Noise.

No, never heard of Nancarrow. And my computer has no sound these days, so the link is no help.

But I'm aware of Annea Lockwood, who has been setting pianos on fire for decades, with microphones inside.

You are correct, Sir. Port Townsend hosts a fabulous Kinetic Sculpture Race on the first weekend of October -- 20-plus years now. I make it up there roughly every other year. (850 miles each way).

My friend the film maker's name is Oli (Oliver). Oli filmed all the Kinetic Sculpture Races from Port Townsend to Northern California over a year and a half, with two cameras. Sometimes, one of the cameras was mounted on my Racing Sculpture (the one in my avatar) -- when Oli himself was onboard.

I think he is still editing all this footage, but he has already assembled several films and won an award or two.

I am convinced Oli would be a good fit for Burning Man. His main concern is his worry about his expensive cameras.

What I was thinking, Captain, was that if you build Ludwig Von Prudhomme, Oli might want to drop in during the construction process for some how-it-was-created footage.

Here is piano #4, a Lester. This style is known as a Spinet Piano, and it weighs only around 200 pounds. I moved this one from the trailer into my living room by myself. That means that any two sturdy guys can load one of these into a pickem-up-truck and bring it to Burning Man. Spinets are not as common as the Big Honking Tall Uprights, but they are still available free from time to time.

Since it is so light, I figure we can move this one around the Playa by pedal power.
