Barbarian Camp

Postby Ugly Dougly » Sat Feb 07, 2009 11:16 am

Friends. I am afraid that I have been painted as an enemy of civilization and of civilized people. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Civilization is fun. Those Roman senators made such appealing squeaking noises when I roast them over a fire. So much loot, so much booty.

So I invite friends, Romans, countrymen, to come join us in a civilized ghetto at the other end of camp. You need have no fear: you will not be harmed. You should have health insurance, sign your will, prepare funeral plans and make your peace with your repulsive deities of course.

But we'll have fun! We can take turns looting, burning and pillaging each other. It'll be just like old times. Just wear these costumes and my barbarians will know who to spurn, in a good-natured BRC way of course:

Yes, and I believe there is a Belegarth camp. Shall we raid them and die gloriously?

Clarion in Chinatown is pretty inspiring. Quite a selection of gongs.

I think if you want hammer out your own, you'd best get earplugs first. ;)

Clarion is on an interesting back-alley off of Grant. Decent selection of gongs but no bongs.

So what's a barbarian?

You don't need a beard to be a barbarian, or boobs or beer, although you won't be turned away if you show up with all three!

Burningman is a primal expierience, praise La-Ri! It's not a historical documentary. Lo, 'tis ART!

So let's go ahead and forget about what Romans called barbarians or the origin of that word or who killed who....

When you say "Barbarian" you get an image in your mind anyway don't you?!

A wildman or wildwoman, who looks to the wilderness as home, and sees spirits in the fire! A barbarian would rather die than lose their savage freedom, proud of their primitive way, but honorable and just in their rough-hewn manner.

Iron John, Conan of Cimmeria, Tarzan of the Apes, the Noble Savage...

Time enough for civilization when turn our trails out of the desert, my friends.

i almost see the definition of the entire festival in this, dougly ...

my own image of a barbarian, no doubt drawn from an inadequate number of sources, is of a big guy who goes raping and pillaging through the land... but i like your definition much better, i especially like the openness of it ... a post-civilization barbarian could look like just about anything, as could a modern barbarian who eschews civilization. the evolution of barbarians ... ?

unfortunately i have a hard time finding images of what i am thinking ... guess i'll just get a snake ... i love the dress ... but is it more hippy than barbarian?
