Kinetic Sculpture Racing Camp is a fact!
Or at least I’m reasonably certain, since we are now listed in the Theme Camp directory -- http://www.burningman.com/themecamps/07 ... ill_k.html.

As of 2007 June 26, we have 14 people signed up. That’s right on track, as we predicted between 20 and 30 total.

Between those 14 people, I’m counting roughly ten Kinetic Kontraptions, from single seaters to four-seaters, so we will be giving lots of rides and going on parades and... whatnot.

I also have a growing collection of KSR films, so we hope to show films on a big outdoor screen. I just need to build some sort of dust resistant “homeâ€

I'll be seeing you in Cornvally July 20-22 right? Think I will bring my water canon.. I will be sitting on my yellow zappy pointing and laughing.. It's a bitch getting off the start line there.. Most get stuck behind some slow poke.. One year two orthro surgeon peddling this hugh bone got away fast.. They beat me to the fair grounds.. That was before the sand trap.. Also before the running path was paved..

Yes, the next race is in Corvallis, Oregon, July 20-22. I'll certainly be there with "Henry Ford Goes Surfing, version 4.2". That race is part of the daVinci Days Festival of Art and Science.

Then, after BM, there is a small race in Prescott Valley, Arizona, September 15.

Next, Port Townsend, Washington, October 6-7.

Finally, Ventura, Southern California, October 27.

There is so much crossover between BM and KSR that this Theme Camp is a natural -- specially this year with the Green Man theme.

At the moment, I count 16 people confirmed for the KSR Camp, with close to ten Kinetic Racing Kontraptions. That can probably be considered ahead of schedule, as we estimated 20 to 29 people total. Four of the 16 are from Corvallis.

Congratulations on the theme camp registration, Elliot!

Having a test drive of Henry Ford at BM 2006 was soooooooo cool!

I'm sure this camp will be just great!

The front wheel drive is still being built. It is THREE wheel drive at the moment. But the important thing is that this is an entirely new chassis, which steers by pivoting in the middle.

Yes, like a front end loader or earth mover. Common arrangement in KSR -- eliminates the need for drive shaft U-joints. Most such Kontraptions use two pivoting sleeves -- one vertical for steering and one horizontal for "suspension" movement (to keep all four wheels on the ground over uneven terrain). I use the "European earth mover" arrangement -- one ball joint at the top, and a link with two ball joints at the bottom.

Everybody with human-powered Kontraptions "needs" to come by KSRCamp. We pretend fancy, but much of our stuff is built of coffee cans too!

We have 20 people and ten Kontraptions as of today. But room for more, you bet.

And we have been invited to set up a display in the Man Pavillion!

The Theme Camp Placement Team must like the idea of Kinetic Sculpture Racing, for we have been issued 75 feet by 100 feet at 4:30 and Coral Reef!

We have no set schedule of events, but from mid-morning to sunset there will always be somebody "on duty" in camp to share the world of KSR with you.

After sunset, you will find us mostly out and about, giving rides and bragging up our favorite sport/hobby/art-form/transportation-mode all over BRC.

And... having received almost as much space as we asked for, we have room for more Camp Members. Sure, most Kineticists who go to the Burn already have their own camp, but if you don't....

Update:
Looks like KSR Camp will have around 24 people and ten Kinetic Kontraptions. We will also have a display in the Man Pavilion!

Our biggest public event will likely be our participation in the Art Bike Parade on Thursday -- probably at 2 PM. Starts at Center Camp and ends at The Man.

Camp is scheduled to be open to the public 10 AM to 6 PM daily, to play with our Silly Kinetic Kontraptions.

It seems safe to declare that Kinetic Sculpture Racing Camp was a success.

Image

We had eight full fledged KSR Kontraptions, some other goofy bikes on the side, and we gave rides all day long every day.

Rutabaga Queen Shaye emerged as the highly competent Organizer of our Pavilion Exhibit and other activities, and she will have full charge of the camp next year. (I'll be attempting to introduce the concept of Music to BM.)

Woohoo!

From my studio Google says;
72.8 mi – about 1 hour 41 mins
A bit far for pedalling
But close enough for dragging my vehicle up for consultation

in the past my collaboration projects were motorized;

I'm back from Prescott Valley, AZ, KSR. Tiny race, but great enthusiasm and art-work, so that race has a bright future.

Scott, have we met before? I'm awful with remembering people.
Their Machines, those I remember. ;-) We could indeed collaborate, if you can come up here on short notice -- I travel a lot, and irregularly. We could PM.

BAS, oh YOU BET there will be a Kinetic Sculpture Racing Camp in 2008! This year was a great success by all accounts, so we'll be back. Rutabaga Queen Shaye will be in charge, so I can concentrate on the neighboring Real Music Camp.
You may have noticed that the Theme Camp Placement Team put several bicycle / Human Powered Vehicle camps in a group this year, and I'm in contact with our placer. The thinking is to continue the HPV "enclave", and replace the RLD techno venue with Real Music Camp. Too early to say, of course, but we are definitely already planning 2008.

Let's hope we can get the BMORG to set up 2008 ePlaya threads soon.
