Satellite Image - Time & Date Announcement

Postby Gatecrasher » Fri Jul 21, 2006 10:58 am

The Date & Time for this years IKONOS satellite image of Black Rock City has been set, the best available date is:

Thursday, 31-Aug-2006 11:48am
(18:48:58 GMT)

If you want to do something simple, you can draw in the desert using 10' wide black tarps held down with yard staples, or look at the Project Megapixels thread.

Here is a link to last years picture.

Cheers everyone, can't wait to see you all on the playa.

Can't wait to be there!

Any word on if it'll be at a higher resoluton this year? I loved last years, but was hard to pick out some of the camps.

And... I WANT A PRINT! How do we go about getting one?

You could also click the picture that Gatecrasher posted. It links you to the larger photo on Flickr. Craftier still, at the top of the page you can click on the higher resolution photo, something like 5800x4800 resolution (link). Ooh, I can see my camp (9:30 & Bi-Polar)!

Thank you for posting the info and pic, Gatecrasher!

That photo is amazing.

I have not read what time and day this was taken, but I can tell you that it was taken on saturday, most likely around 11 in the morning.

I can see our camp at 4:30 and Bipolar very well.

Look due south of center camp, between Catharsis and Ego -- looks like someone made the Burning Man logo. I wonder if that was on purpose.

Cool. I was worried about the light clouds.

I'm actually hoping the image I made doesn't show up well. It'll take the pressure off.

BTW, I'm instructing everyone I know to beat me senseless with a 2x4 if I even mention doing an art project in 07.

Here it is

Postby Gatecrasher » Thu Sep 07, 2006 10:07 pm

The source image is much larger, and I of coure, didn't color balance it well, so I'll probably post some sort of an update, but here's the camp itself. Leave me comments in Flickr (or here). Cheers!

(click on the photo to see it in flickr, and don't forget to look at it in original size!)

Cool. The N is clearly visible to the right of the Cathedral. Some of the colors in the arrow are visible, but they're pretty indistinct. The Chinese dragon coming up from esplanade toward the man along 6 is much more visible.

Ok, how does one view it in the original size? I can't get it to work.

You have to login to see it and I rarely login to those accounts anymore. But it works now.

Edit: There must be something wrong, last year I could zoom down to tent level...even with the largest image off that link it starts turning into blocks of pixels pretty quick...6 pc's, CRT's to LCD's to projection, it still looks bad close up.

Bah, maybe something better will come along. After last year I'm disappointed in this image. I hope it was free or someone got screwed.

It could be that you didn't wait long enough for it to load. The file is interlaced, so it will start out blocky and get better and better as it fills in. It is a big big file.

It should be exactly the same quality as last years picture, which I posted at the head of this thread.

It wasn't free, but I don't think I got screwed, since I was aware of the quality going in. :-)

I was able to see the photo on flickr. However, I was not able to zoom. What is the original url for this photo (of BM 2006?)

KIV, in comparing like elements (Center Camp), I see the same level of detail. The new image does seem to need some tweaking yet, as Gatecrasher said earlier, but otherwise it's pretty much the same.

Rumor has it that an air photo company took super-high-resolution aerial photos of the area.

I don't know if they will make that public, or use it for some insideous money-making entreprise....

I think I located where I was camped..., and this was my first year. Anyway, there is that weird bulge in 4:00 near the outtermost ring, so I think that this is this year's photo. (As far as I can tell, I must have created the bulge by parking a bit further in than I had intended, but not so far in that anyone was willing to camp on the street side of me. It was kind of nice having a "front lawn". )

nice picture - just as I remember it! For all those doubting thomases, it IS 2006 because of the 4:30 and 7:30 plazas, as well as the obvious large art installations. skepticism never ceases to amaze me.

a nice revisit to HOME!

thanks!

Something doesn't quite make sense...the Chinese Dragon was put together starting at 2pm on Thursday and made it's way down toward Center Camp around 4pm. So how can it have been just before noon?
