Fire Dancers Dreamland

Postby Bronwen » Mon Apr 25, 2005 8:15 pm

Hi all you fire twirlers out there!

I am designing a stage right now for fire performance. I have a 100sq ft space limitation and need to use lightweight and portable materials, but other than that the design is open.

As a fire performer, what would your dream stage be?

Would you want/need music? Would you want/like natural wind sound that would occur through the structural support conduit?

Would you want any sort of lighting or is "pure" darkness the best?

Would you like a traditional "stage" setup or something different?

I have a concept for a semi-circular raised platform with a sort of canvas "windbreak" behind it with glow in the dark flames painted on it and el-wire around the top edges. The windbreak would be supported on metal or plastic conduit cut on the diagonal at the top so that the wind would generate sounds similar to a digerido (sp?)....

Your input is hugely appreciated!

Just my opinion...

1) Dark, Dark, Dark!
2) A lighter that you can ignite with your foot (but goes out afterward for DARKNESS).
3) No splinters in case I want to go at it barefoot.
4) Some sort of textute around the edge of the stage, so I know that I'm about to fall off.
5) Music is good and can be turned off (there are a LOT of DJs out there looking for stages).
6) Fuel and extinguishers, so I don't have to drag it around.
7) A stage that can handle small fires (I've seen people spin in a ring of fire; hey if we're talk'n "dream"...)
8) Talk enough, so the short people in the back can see.
9) A coat/hat rack.
10) A mirror (for costume/mask folks).
11) Ocean front views
12) A landscape of money trees
13) A "World Peace" push-button

P.S. Do you own a red VW van?

Thanks for the insight BRC!

Since I will likely design this for use at the beach as well as elsewhere, your oceanfront dream CAN be a reality.

The idea of texture around the edges is fantastic, I'll definitely use that.

Tell me about these lighters you can work with your foot. I am curious about it.

As for the money trees and world peace, sorry but I'm all out and my supplier says he's not getting any more in. Too bad, huh?

Foot-Pedal Lighter

Postby brc-fun » Wed May 04, 2005 11:07 am

Regarding the Foot-Pedal Lighter,

Well, if it was my "dream" set-up, it would work with magic, but not everyone knows how to use magic, so for those unfortunate people, I would build a stand that held a "Self-Igniting Propane Torch" like one of the ones on this web-page:

http://www.bernzomatic.com/bernzomatic/ ... OPAT100001

If you had the torch head positioned so that the trigger was pointing at the sky, you could have a wire looped around the trigger that ran down to a simple foot peddle (board on a hinge with a spring under it). Step on the peddle, ignite the flame; remove your foot, flame goes out.

I have one of these torch heads at home. I'll check to see if the trigger both lights the flame and controls the gas on/off. I think that the two might operate independently, so the system would need to be expanded to control the gas on/off.

It's all much easier if they'd just learn magic...

It would work!

I pulled out my propane braising torch last night, and after evicting an spider, discovered that it does work as I thought: Pull the trigger, and it lights like an electric cigarette lighter. Write back if any of this doesn't make since...

One thing that i think would be cool is a surface that still holds its traction, ive found spinning on some wood and most brick surfaces it gets very slippery especialy if people are spinning with Kero or Lamp Oil,

As for music, maybe have the option for people to bring their own, or "themed" playlists.
