Coffee shops and wifi

Postby AKDMAN » Thu Mar 17, 2011 4:16 am

Center camp should totally have wifi, I mean if I'm paying $5.25 for a latte frapachinno with no ice, no foam, light on the acidity, then I need some wifi to entertain me while I sip on the latte frapachinno, no ice, no foam, light on the acidity beverage that I bought at the burningman, or else I would just get coffee from my next door neighbor for free.... I'd rather pay money for coffee... Who else?

Yeah AKDMAN, bringing extra money for coffee at center camp is a great idea.... I spent hours in line meeting people who were also waiting to spend money on coffee at the burningman, we all had the same idea!! It was cool of the burningman to only charge me $5.25 for my coffee because that's like what it costs for a good frap nowadays, I mean @ Starbucks it's like $11.95 for the same frap, and they don't even hold the acidity in Starbucks!! WTF

Green nuts are the best.

I've drank coffee flavored drinks from center camp and haven't paid for them before. Where are you getting that price? Did you forget your cup?

You Sir have obviously never experienced the wonder that is the Burning Life festival. (aka, the cyber regional burn) So many people to talk to, so many great art installations, and because of the medium some people are art.

Oh! And yes, you can find virtual horse shit on display. It's normally by the pony girls and boys or close to horse biased furies. Sometimes you might find some by centaurs, but they're usually more polite then that.

It's incredulous to think of why anyone would come to burning man and want to sit at a computer or text or call anyone. There is so much to see and do, lots of people to meet and connect with.

When I go for the first time this year, and any year after this, I want to get away from all of the default world sludge, and just exhale all the mind-numbing garbage drumming in my head, and hear the din of creative juices flowing like a river swollen with rain.

Well, so much for my rant. Thank you for reading. don't forget to read my column next week: "Sex or Celibacy: What Priests Really Think About The Issues of Todays Papal Pleasures".
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

maryanimal, that's one of my favorite things about the event. I don't touch a phone or computer the whole time. It's amazing how quiet my mind gets. I didn't know I could be so serene and untroubled. In 2008 (my return after a 5 year absence) it literally turned my life around.

If accessibility becomes super easy I will just have to pretend it isn't. The unspoken version of "LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU . . . I HAVE DESERT IN MY EARS.

Just to answer this bit for a moment. While I firmly stay disconnected while I'm on the playa I can understand why some people would want to at least check email once.

Case and point in 09 I landed a contract worth my normal quarter year take on Tuesday of the event. It wasn't till a week later that I found out and was frantically calling and emailing the client. I'll tell you what, I've never had a moment that I ever wished more that I would of brought my laptop to Center Camp and looked at email.
To finish up the story: When they got back to me they informed me that they decided to wait (and not move on to someone else) because they happened upon my twitter and saw I was at the burn. Now to be fair this deal looked dead in the water for weeks before the burn, so I never said I was going to be missing for a bit to them.

For some people depending on what they do for work, I totally get wanting to touch base with the rest of the world. Others not so much.. Unless they have a sitter watching kids or something, that I get as well.

Using cell phones, computers, or internet should be like the *cough* drug use that supposedly people take part in: keep it out of sight and discreet. What I don't want to see or hear is people yakking on their phones, texting, or updating their inane Facebook pages while at BM. Bad enough it permeates the "real world."

I do like a bit of internet or phone access simply for the purpose of checking in once or twice during my stay (I come early and leave late). I have two kids at home. Granted, they are teens, but they didn't used to be when I began going and they still appreciate a check in from their dirty burner mom out in the desert; even if it's just a quick email to let them know I'm alive!

I am one of those humans whose work doesn’t stop when I go to bed. By the time I wake up in the morning I have at least 10 e-mails from people all over the world that need something from me.

That said; when I go to Burning Man EVERYONE knows that from date X to date Y I am out of cell phone and computer range and cannot be contacted. This is one of the things besides not being sold stuff that I like so much about Burning Man. I am out of contact with everyone……if they have a problem……they can figure it out.

Burning Man is the one place in the universe where I can get away from all that bull shit…………how refreshing.

Computers and cell phones at Burning Man are like seeing someone walking around wearing an IPod at Burning Man……….it’s both bad and wrong…….for me.
How do I get a hold of you?

You just contact the mayor's office. He has a special signal he shines in the sky; it's in the shape of a giant cock.
