Postby dirtbag magee » Mon Jun 22, 2009 12:24 pm

So this will be my seconed year at BM. I had a blast last year, this year Im gonna be going with my girlfreind and some other's. I've heard some things about burning man can either make or breake a relationship. I am just wondering if anyone can give me a few tips for making it go smoothly.

Hey there - I'm not speaking from experience, but from what I've been told - the way to go is to define your boundaries. If you know what each of you is comfortable with, then you're less likely to step on anyone's toes.
Unless she wants you to step on hers.

And make sure she doesn't any naked men. And you both don't any same-gender, or anyone whose gender you can't determine.

In fact, when in doubt, don't. Period.

OK, here's a serious response with what I hope are some useful suggestions.

Talk about your hopes and expectations, especially your desires and boundaries. What things do you both want to experience, and what are the deal breakers. Whatever currently delights or frustrates you about each other will be amplified, so get it out in the open as soon as you can [this is good advice even if you don't go to the playa].

Talk to people who have been there, especially if those people have relationship experience on the playa. It's OK to use the boards to find people, but eplaya (and tribe and...) are only going to take you so far. On the other hand, there's a lot to read posted all over, so read it (search is your friend).

Go to something together like a regional. Burning Man will be a stressful week in the heat and cold and dust and wind. Try something less taxing at first.

You need to look out after each other too ... when one of you gets touchy, listen when the other tells you to drink some water, sit in the shade, eat. I have squabbled with MyLarry, and usually it is when we're tired or getting a little dry. we just take a break for an hour or two and we're good. I only stomped off without water once, but luckily I have ranger buddies who chased me down and made sure I had my pack. It was over nothing... just picking at each other until we blew up.

If you dig around on the main site, you will find a relationship guide. Let me know if it eludes you and I'll look it up.

Even if you two want time apart, be certain to honor time together.
Some sunshine, some dust, a little paint and a tutu. Yeah.

Have as much sex with your GF in all the right places on Playa and you will be fine, if a little sticky.

I do not see what the big deal is. Been out there with my lady for a decade now with no issues.

The only thing better than going with an unseasoned girl friend is going with your girlfriend and having your ex-girlfriend close by - usually in the same camp.

It provides HOURS of entertainment for the rest of us.

It depends on what Dirtbag's girlfriend gets upset about. People get edgy when they're partying all week.

I notice that we do get cranky when we are not drinking enough water.

Nothing beats playa sex. It doesn't matter how hot and sticky you are, you will not be able to keep your hands off each other.

Don't do everything together. Go get lost on your own, meet back at sunset, or even sunrise.

I prefer "You may be right, dear". It preserves just enough ambiguity to preserve shreds of my dignity.

Rumor has it that Ugly will be on a leash this year. Keep an eye on how it goes for Ugly. Let that be your guide.

:)
Basic b/e analysis:
2005 $243K
06 $855K
07 $1.0M
08 $1.1M
09 $0
10 $1.1M
11 $1.2M
12 $1.2M
That’s $6.8M that thousands of volunteers deserve to know about. Capitalism is alive at BM. Tickets are the commodity. Others have estimated higher profits.
